Memphis.

That being said, Montgomery also sucks.

This is not my experience. When people ask where I live, I still answer Birmingham despite being a 25 minute drive from downtown.

It’s hard to imagine a city worse than Montgomery.

I’m from Montgomery originally. It is the most boring place on earth.

Is there still a debate at this point?

Memphis 64%
Montgomery 61%

Percentages are close enough that…

Been awhile since I've been to Memphis. At the time, west Memphis might have been the most awful place I've laid eyes on outside of Gary, Indiana. I've lived in the Montgomery area most of my life and it's been depressing to watch it slowly rot away. It's never been dynamic, but it was once nice enough. Gang fights shut down the malls. Drug turf has crept into probably half or more of the city and the wealthier citizens keep moving east. Auburn will be a suburb, eventually.

It doesn't help that Montgomery is such a transient town. The two major employers are the air force and the state, so many who you meet are only there temporarily and that makes it hard stabilizing anything.

The faster cripple is what is being debated here.

Avoid both unless traveling and then avoid stopping in town.

The OP asked specifically about dangerous crime. Montgomery, while a boring place in many respects, isn’t that dangerous. Yes it has some bad areas but overall I wouldn’t consider it a dangerous city.

Memphis is having a really bad week. But it’s a better town than Montgomery, with better companies and nicer suburbs.

IDK how long it will be that way if they can’t clamp down on crime.

The Gump is a shithole, but it's Memphis by miles.

Memphis has more going for it, it also has more and more severe crime, IMO.

Montgomery has almost no redeeming quality, but there are still little pockets of Montgomery where you can live a pretty quiet life.

Memphis is a much better city than Montgomery, but also probably more dangerous/less safe.

Have to do a risk/reward analysis.
