Talking to an IBM employee who was in New York city at the time. She asked me if I was sitting down and proceeded to tell me that an airplane had hit one of the towers. That was before anyone knew what was going on.

9th grade Biology class. That room had the only tv with cable in the school. The teacher came running in right before class telling us to cut it on. Watched all of 8 cst - 9 cst happen… 2nd tower getting hit, pentagon reports, etc.
That teacher turned out to be a pedophile, but that’s neither here nor there.

On the roof of the World Trade Mart in New Orleans. They evacuated the building because it was sometimes referred to as the World Trade Center so they scooted us out pretty quick.
Wife was in Glendive, Montana. Caught a ride to Miles City-rented a car and drove back by herself.

Jr High.
2nd period was when the first strike, between 2nd and 3rd was the second. 3rd was gym, so outside running and didn’t hear a thing, come into lunch and the teachers are trying to get the projectors running for the news, by the time of 4th period, they’d collapsed and it was nothing but aftermath.
I had no idea it was called the World Trade Center so didn’t realize what happened until I got home

quote:I had a similar experience in Almaty when I returned to work two days later on Thursday morning.
The Scottish guys, each and every one of them, gave me a hug and offered condolences.
I was teaching a banking class for commercial and Kazakh central bankers. Before I could start the class on Thursday morning, one of the Kazakh ladies who spoke good English stood up at her desk and asked me if she could say a few words.
She said all of the people in the class had decided they needed to let me know how sorry they were for what had happened in my country and even though most of them were Moslem, they hated the people who had carried out the attacks. It was wrong.
She wanted me to tell all my American friends that my Kazakh friends supported the U.S. and wanted justice for our dead citizens.
By the time she finished talking someone was cutting onions near me. I didn't boo-hoo but I had tears streaming down my cheeks.
Then the entire class (about 30 people) stood up, walked to where I was standing in the front of the room, lined up and hugged me one by one.
I'll never forget their simple act of kindness.

Got up that morning to drive to class at LSU. I always listened to sports radio in the morning, so when I started my car and heard the news on the radio I thought "WTF, who changed the channel?" Then when I confirmed it was the sports radio channel I thought "WTF? Did the station just suddenly change its format from sports radio over night with no warning?"
I listened for a few moments before reaching the parking lot (that when breaking news was still "breaking news!") and heard there was an accident in NYC and a small plane had apparently hit the WTC. I didn't think much of it other than it being an accident so I just went to class as usual. There was nothing particularly unusual about the class. After it ended, I walked back to my truck to drive to work for the day. I didn't talk to anyone on my walk back and this was the era before smart phones and really text messages. I had gotten a cell phone for the first time in my life not too long before so it's not like it ws glued to my hand. In fact, I think I probably left it in the car.
When I started the truck the radio was still on the same station, but this time the tone was much more serious. The reporter was talking about a second plane hitting the buildings and I knew it was no longer an accident. There was a lot of confusion and unknown in the early aftermath. Once I got to work the TV was already on with my co-workers all gathered around, watching. It took a few hours it seemed for the severity and realization to set in that this was an attack on the country.

At a deposition in a law office on one of the upper floors of the Lakeway Center on Causeway.
We were watching the aftermath on a small, grainy television.
Naturally everyone was in a tense mood. Then the fire alarm went off and everyone darted for the exits. There was a long line waiting for the elevator. On my way to the stairwell, I shouted out “You can wait for this elevator if you want but my butt is walking down the stairs “. Most of them followed me.

I was at a prep school in Connecticut (My one and only year). First day of classes, and the entire school took an all school photo on the football field. Right after we finished taking the picture was when I heard the first whispers of it getting passed around. We went back to the dorm and huddled in one of the faculty apartments and watched the second plane hit the building. It was awful to sit there and listen to a couple of kids hammer dialing parents/relatives that they had in the buildings. If I remember correctly, everyone but maybe a godparent or something made it out of the buildings that these guys were related to.
Months later, we went back and looked at the flight path of the two planes out of Boston. The first plane that hit the tower turned off course towards new york right over our campus at about the same time we were taking the all school picture mentioned above. Its creepy to look at on this day and think that still has that connection to that event.
