With all due respect, this is hyperbole. The vast majority of Chicagoans are more progressive on issues of race than, say, the denizens of rural Mississippi. Moreover, the fact that you try to generalize based on the isolated statements of a few primitives from BridgePort and Back of the Yards demonstrates your lack of familiarity with the city's ethnography, history, and demographics. It's the equivalent of trying to extrapolate Louisiana's racial atmosphere from the derelict vestiges of the Klan that persist in certain backwaters. Not representative.
It's beyond that, and I hear it - and stuff like it - in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and all over. I know the city's history and demography very well. It's not isolated to Bridgeport and Beverly or wherever; it's just worse there.
Chicago has a poisonous racial atmosphere, much worse than most places all over the country. It is one of the most segregated cities in America. It was ground zero for red-lining. It had probably the worst racial riots in all of America in 1968. Native Son could pretty much only have been written in Chicago.

More globally, this entire thread is rife with nonsense stereotypes. I've lived in the North. I've lived in the South. Excellence and ignorance are not the exclusive province of either. Good and bad folks everywhere.
I would agree with that, though I do think some areas are worse than others. Some cities are worse than others; some states are worse than others.

Spent last week in 30a for a wedding, couldn't wait to get out of there. Not everyone is lusting for Florida. The humidity was brutal.

Is this where a bunch of people who haven't traveled outside of the south talk about stereotypes they see on movies and TV shows?

I was doing a job in Bywater the other day by the Joint (a popular local BBQ place) and I smelled the food and remarked to the customer how good it smelled. The lady replied to me.
"I don't like it, it's not real BBQ, everything is just smoked, they should call it smoked meats, not BBQ, nothing is grilled"
I just smiled and walked over to the Joint and got me a 3 meat combo with two sides to fill my fat arse up and laugh off that yankee's idea of BBQ.
