having worked at some hotels in the past i can tell you for a fact, unless its a 5 star luxury hotel, if you make the bed before you leave it stays just like that for the next guest.
hell, they dont even change the sheets unless you leave deposits on them
its all about covering things up to make you think its clean and very little cleaning actually goes on after you leave or before you get there

My wife uses the coffee maker in the room and it grosses me out.

Yes, I won’t make the bed. But I’ll put the dirty towels in a pile, try not to leave water everywhere, pickup tooth paste junk etc. if it’s a place that Ive stayed for a few days on vacation (upper end stuff) I’ll leave a tip.

I don't really mess up a hotel. I throw away things that need to be thrown away, but things back where they belong.
Anyone who leaves a hotel a complete mess is just lazy. It's really not hard to keep a hotel room in tact.

I don't make up the bed that I used, because they're just going to strip it down and put fresh linens on anyway, I hope.
Same with the towels, they're going to take the dirty ones and replace them with clean ones, so I leave the ones I used hanging up or on the counter.
I don't know that I've ever used a hotel coffee maker... which is surprising considering I drink a lot of coffee.

Generally the maid (I hope) strips down the sheets and the like, so unless there’s trash all over the floor, there shouldn’t be much to straighten up

yes, I always tidy up before leaving.
