Not all...but all the one's who fit into this category pretty much exclusively advertise their "family in matching flannel sitting on a blanket in front of a pine tree photo shoot" on FB

It’s still overcharging for their so called skill that most people can do with a month of training

Sounds like you should open your own studio.

I'm getting married in Iceland next year, and our photographers are charging $8200. I nearly caught a heart attack, but they are flying in from Russia and spending 7 hrs with us, driving from backdrop to backdrop.

Nice bag of the basics. All you need is a Tokina 11-16/2.8, and you'll have the trificta covered. Maybe a Canon 50/1.4 for those "I an amateur so dont blame me" pics, and get more praise. Ha. If you are really enjoying take those for people.

Great photographers don’t rely on editing images
well thats just 100% wrong. Editing has just changed from film, camera settings, and dark room work to computer editing

the market is over saturated with a bunch of hobbyist who don't know what they are doing, so the legit photographers can charge more because they are becoming more rare, but still highly sought after

This is almost perfectly correct. The real photographers (and I know a few) use the new technology to do great work. The hobbyists use the technology to snap passable images. The pros are worth the price.

Weddings is a different market, and it's off the rails. The pros I know don't do weddings. The wedding people I know are not nearly as good as the pros.

But if you need a great image for advertising or a real professional portrait, the price is well justified.

A friend of mine charges a base rate generally. Usually spends about an hour to two hours with a client and then 5-7 hours editing. It's a lot more work than you think it is. Plus the overhead expenses are insane.

There are so many ignorant people in this thread. As a photographer (hobbyist), I can tell you photography isn’t something you can learn in a month, or something you can do with a camera phone.

$400 an hour is not expensive for photo session. Most family portrait sessions shouldn’t last more than an hour.

There is a reason wedding photographers charge $3000+, they are spending hours and hours editing 100’s of photos, plus usually 6-8 hours the day of the wedding, and portraits of the bride/groom weeks before the wedding.

Any photographer that edits their images through pre-set editing programs, are not photographers.

I guarantee you it will. Go ahead and pay somebody $500 to spend “hours” editing your picture, and then slap it on a piece of matte cardstock from Shutterfly and see if you can tell the difference between that and a card made with an iPhone photo. I’m not saying that my iPhone pictures are landing in National Geographic next month, I’m just saying that a “professional” photo session is overkill for most of the things people want pictures for. But hey it’s your money.

Yeah, this same person shoots professionally as her full time job thru a company and freelances on the side. I actually sent her this thread and her response was "what in the actual frick".

Shooting the pictures is 1/10th of the work. Most will spend several hours editing images.

Scruffy’s future SIL is a wedding photographer and the stuff she does with Photoshop borders on wizardry.

Yeah, because it’s essentially playing with house money since the wedding industry has made everything associated with it so damn expensive.

Light and composition

It's easy to tell amateurs from professionals. I'm an amateur, but love photography

Good equipment can cost 10-20k

Most of the so called pros are getting hammered and banging the groomsman while they are supposed to be taking pictures. Then pissing on the trees in public. Not worth it.
