I've never met anybody who paid 4 figures for a family photo shoot. Is this a legit thing?

the market is over saturated with a bunch of hobbyist who don't know what they are doing, so the legit photographers can charge more because they are becoming more rare, but still highly sought after

Yeah this OP doesnt get how they may have a booked schedule, so pricing up to see if serious and/or worth the trouble in their schedules.

Biggest time consumer with editing is also the # to look thru. it's an "art" for some, and also their signature. Need to find 1-10 pics out of hundreds.

There's still time. You should shoot a wedding this weekend.

As an amateur photographer who doesn't do paid work, I love it when people talk about how easy photography is. Or, I could do that with muh phone!

There are a lot of shitty photographers out there that just bought a camera, set it to auto, and started asking for money to do photos. But, you get what you pay for. There's a lot more involved in good photography.

Yes. Location. Portofolios wanted. Rep of photographer. Easy to reach this #.

Some photographers get good reps amongst the rich, and becomes a talking point during gatherings.

They charge more than most lawyers. The going rate seems to be $400 an hour, I should have been a photographer.

Best investment I've made in recent years was hiring a professional photographer for shots when I was selling my house.

Crazy. I do it for fun. I'll do some football action shots a few times a year and then just walk around and shoot. I've done a couple Christmas card sessions for free where it is understood that I'm an amateur.

My biggest issue I see these days is over-editing. People get Photoshop and just go wild.

you like it or not?

My sisters family pics this past year had that frost look to them, and thought it looked great. Apparently it was the current style/look. I'm sure some do it better than others.

Yep. I have a friend whose wife is the classic FB mom "professional photographer"

She doesn't take bad photos, she just over edits. The people look like porcelain dolls. It's awful.

It’s not $400 an hour. You’re paying for the session, editing and presentation. They’ve probably spend around five hours on getting you your Christmas card pics.

This is a no-brainer since most people shop for homes online these days and taking good photos of a house is not easy at all.

If you hire an agent to sell your home and they pull out a camera or phone and start taking the listing photos themselves you should politely fire them on the spot and find another agent.

l knew of this woman who did that once and after she sent out the cards she realized her nipple was exposed in the picture.

Same here.

I love going to my local shop, and seeing/talking to the mix of old school studio guys, housewives all exited about their new biz, and rich dudes gearing up for their upcoming foreign excursion. Ha.

I agree. I just think it's the newer people. Takes time to get your "look" just right. Practice practice practice kind of thing.

As long as they know you are an amateur then thats good. Should give you dinner or something though. Ha. What do you use for your football pics?

I like outdoors stuff. Combine it with my want hiking/camping deep in their "mountain man" wannabe style. I'll post up for hours, and take different shots of a cool/funky tree or whatever caught my attention. I'd rather do the "editing/filtering" out there with my camera then behind a computer in my home office. Problem with tech improvements is constantly learning, and tweaking. So if you are sold on your "style/look" it has to adjust as new tech comes out.

2 Canon EOS 7Ds. One with a 17-50mm f/2.8 and the other with a 70-200mm f/2.8 telephoto lens.

Steps to becoming a professional photographer:

1. Own a camera with a neck strap
2. Don’t have a real job.

In all seriousness, I can understand hiring a photographer for a wedding, or some big event. You’re not just paying them to push a button, you’re paying them to be in the right place at the right time, and also wrangle 25 people and get the whole list of pictures you want in a short amount of time. But, if you just want something for your family’s Christmas card, your iPhone X is going to do just fine.

You proved the OP’s point. Great photographers don’t rely on editing images. The shot itself is good. That’s kinda the point.

Wut?
