When does the gap between actual food and restaurant prices make people stop eating out?

It’s getting insane. I can go to the store, get two good New York strips for me and my wife along with some potatoes and a vegetable, and cook a really good dinner for the price of eating two Box combos at Cane’s. I hit a point where I got tired of getting fricked by restaurants for cheap food that isn’t that good anyway around a year ago and now I cook 70% of time or more. The restaurant industry has to hit a tipping point sometime soon right?

This country is so lazy that restaurants will always survive.

Yea and the price of those have gone way up since a few years ago.

Restaurants are dealing with the same thing. They're not gouging anyone

I avoid fast casual places that ask for a tip on the receipt.

We now buy premade meals from Costco for less than $20 that has about 4-5 servings. Easy choice for busy weeks!

Two good NY strips from the butcher cost more than two box combos. Quit.

Two shitty ones don’t though.

Bingo. We cook 6 nights a week and get takeout the other night whether it be pizza, chinese, Popeye's, etc.

The mexican restaurant by the camp used to be $48 every time the wife and I went. 2 margs/chori queso dip/chimichanga meal/fajita meal. Last time we went they upped their prices and the same dinner is now $87. We are done with them, just won't do over $100 after tip for meh mexican.

Idk about that. I can get takeout fajitas for two and feed my family of 5 for ~$35. Don’t think I can get the meat, vegetables, tortillas, and sides at the grocery store for that cheap…and I still have to come home and cook it.

Groceries are actually insane. Fast food is expensive, too. It cost me $50 to feed my family at Chick Fil A.

Food prices are simply insane these days.

Never. I don’t drive to a restaurant and dine in to save money or time, nor is it the means of feeding myself for survival.

agreed.

OP, you've probably always been able to cook a better meal at a lower cost at home. Maybe you're just getting older and realize the value of eating in a restaurant isn't worth the price?

When I think industries with out of control gross margins, restaurants are definitely what comes to mind...

Costco and generic brand everything at regular store is the way we keep in our food budget for the kids.

The gap between buying and cooking food yourself and eating at restaurants is significantly bigger than it’s ever been. Maybe as a percentage it’s stayed close to the same, but from a pure “X number of dollars” standpoint, the gap is ridiculous.

ETA: and the cost of running my own business has increased significantly from 10 years ago but guess what I’m doing? Eating some of the cost so I don’t go out of business. I don’t increase my prices in proportion with my minor costs just to be a dickhead when it’s not necessary or really hurting my bottom line, and that’s what it seems like restaurants are doing while they cry about how everyone needs to tip 30% so they don’t have to pay for their labor either

Agreed. We buy one of those $17-$20 costco pre prepared meals every week. You cant even get the ingredients for that price and some of their meals are really good. Their lasagna, chicken pot pie and meatloaf are really good according to my kids.

Catering might be a decent option for that too.
