I lived on Jim Taylor in Tigerland from 1980-1984. It wasn't luxury by any means but was relatively safe. Then I lived in Gardere area from 84-87. Again, mostly LSU students or young working adults. By 1990 section 8 had come in and spelled the downfall for both areas.

Dated a girl who lived in Tigerland in 1995. Was fringe sketchy then in the area she lived. Not the worst - but very much on its way.

Some apartments were bought and turned into condos by 2009 but it was way to sketchy for me to invest in any of them with some small complexes stripped bare of wire, bathrooms fixtures and copper pipe by Katrina people

Late 90s early 2000s it was headed off the cliff. Driven by the rapid construction of new “luxury” student housing complexes that the normal apartments couldn’t compete with. So their “tenant mix” became more culturally enriched.

It was sketchy around 2000. With only Sharlo being decent then.

That's it. Once the Commons and Brightside were built no one wanted to stay in tigerland

Yep. I attended LSU 1983-1986, lived in Gardere my first year and had friends live in the area up till 1987. ALL of that area was brand new, almost all students and a few young working grads. Surrounded by undeveloped fields and woods; I'd take walks near the edge of developments and you'd see cows and rabbits...

My best friend had a younger brother that was at LSU in the early 90s, and after attending a daytime LSU game we went by his apartment in Gardere-- I could not believe how quickly that neighborhood had changed. It had essentially become a slum area overnight: big racial and socioeconomic changes, and some of those quadplexes (not even 10 years old) were abandoned and in gutted ruins.

I remember Gardere. The nice Gardere, with affordable housing for LSU students and young married couples in a well-maintained, safe neighborhood.

In the late '80s I lived near Gardere. It was perfect for students -- on the bus line to LSU, and there was a Piggly Wiggly grocery store at the corner of Gardere and Burbank. It was especially good for student couples struggling to work and attend school. I visited people there a few times -- I don't recall any complaints. And of course any time I went there I always felt perfectly SAFE.

In the early 90s I left BR and didn't return for about 10 years. When I came back I was talking with a friend and the subject of Gardere came up. Remembering it from my student days, I talked about what a nice student area it was.

"Are you kidding?", he said, and proceeded to tell me what had happened to the area, including a friend of his from church going there to minister -- and getting stabbed.

Later we were driving around and came to the intersection of Burbank and Gardere.

What had been a great place -- affordable, safe, on the LSU bus line and with a Piggly Wiggly for convenient shopping -- was now a slum. The Piggly Wiggly was gone and the shopping center deserted.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I asked my friend what the hell had happened.

He replied simply, "Section 8".

03-07, Tigerland was sketch.

The places to be were Brightside, that apartment complex on Burbank and ECA if on campus

The Oaks was good but didn’t know anybody whoever lived there.

I knew some rich brauds who lived in those new condos right off campus by southgate. New 20 years ago now.

They started expanding with those apartments down Burbank in 07/08 and I think more students started going down that way.

Jennifer Jean always seemed like foreign to me. Crappy houses that apparently 6 people would pile in together. I always figured some weird drug crap happened over there. Anybody I knew who lived there did lots of drugs.

Man, if we buy it up and bulldoze it, that area would be awesome next to a new arena.

I lived in University View on the corner of Gourrier and W Parker in ‘86-87, then Varn Villa on Brightside ‘88-89. Sharlo was headed downhill and the rest of Tigerland was already shitty. If you can’t walk to campus it better be new. Somehow all the shitty apartments between State street and Chimes st have remained student filled, prolly due to their proximity to campus.

Sharlo was rundown in the early to mid 90s....if not before. The townhomes were still great to live in. I lived on South Brightside View.....wonder what became of it. Lived in a three bedroom three bath with vaulted cielings....damn.......now I'm missing the place
