I don’t like the comic book movies for the most part.
I did enjoy the spawn series on HBO

yeah when i tried starting a fantasy basketball league in 8th grade people thought i was legit crazy b/c it was too complicated/nerdy
that was like 96 or so
the "nerd" presentation is just a fad. actual nerdy stuff isn't that popular

yeah this is somewhat true, too
having internet friends in the mid-90s was not exactly popular. around here it took until after FB (so let's say 2006-2007) for that to be even marginally accepted

How old are you? That was most epic shite a nerd could do. Pretended to be her boyfriend(in costumes) and got to nibble her biscuit. This shite made middle school bearable for nerds like me.

I agree too many nerds nowadays
This morning is great though. I get to hear people bitch about GOF and how they wasted years as it didnt end how they like. Pure ecstasy for me as I dont watch that nerd shite.

The Marvel Studios movies from the last 10 years or so are what really made nerd stuff "take over".

I think kids spend too much time playing video games. As a little girl I was always doing something, like playing softball, gymnastics, or fishing with Daddy.

When did the “nerd” stuff start to take over?
Technology advanced to the point...
1) Technology advanced to the point where a working knowledge of computers was necessary at almost every level of business. Having that talent was suddenly as valuable (if not more valuable) than being an ex-jock salesman with a lot of personality or a mid-level manager who was using his charm and good looks to advance through the company. The nerds had a seat at the table.
2) Technology advanced to the point where superhero/fantasy was no longer restricted to dense literary series or neverending comic titles. Movies and videogames gave the general public easier access to the nerd culture. In the 60's and 70's, a Star Trek fan was someone who made audio recordings of the TV show as it aired and traveled to hear someone associated with the show speak at a convention. Today anyone with Amazon Prime can binge the entire Original Series and claim to be a fan. You can Google any book or TV series and know everything there is to know.
3) Technology advanced to the point where nerds were no longer in isolation. There was a time when you could be really into comics, or Star Trek, or Tolkien, and not know a single local person who shared your interest. Now you find out that there were other people in your high school watching Battlestar Gallactica in secret. Or you get a new job and a new batch of coworker Facebook friends and instantly know who is watching Game of Thrones.

When did the pendulum swing?
eta: Not that I don’t enjoy all of it. It’s just when I was growing up all of the comic book / dragon fantasy world kids were the nerds and it was hardly mainstream.
I think it's when those "nerds" started getting rich off computers and everyone saw that maybe they weren't so bad.

When something becomes mainstream it is no longer nerd stuff.
When someone says I am into nerdy things or I am a big nerd and they list mainstream things like GoT or Marvel then they are not nerds. They are mainstream.

Agreed
What I don't really understand is how many people are familiar with the more obscure comic book stuff. Growing up in the 90s, my friends had zero interest to Antman, Watchmen, etc. (that I'm aware of) most of which I'd never heard of until the movies started popping up.

SFP, That portlandia clip nails my point home. If you watch GoT and Marvel you are not a nerd. If you are larping, eventing or playing dungeons and dragons then you are a nerd.

If you watch protlandia you are probably trans something

When going outside became scary.
I'm part of the problem. At eight I was able to go anywhere I wanted on a bike. Now our 12 year old can't ride in the cul de sac without someone watching

it didn't help that Leonard banged, then married, Penny. That loser nailing a hot chick just opened the flood gates for nerdiness to go mainstream.
