Portlandia is awesome.

playing dungeons and dragons then you are a nerd.
What if you play a 1st edition with some a friend and his older kids? And women?

When did the pendulum swing?
1977 and 1978 when Superman/Star Wars debuted and studios discovered movies can be more than art.

SFP, That portlandia clip nails my point home. If you watch GoT and Marvel you are not a nerd. If you are larping, eventing or playing dungeons and dragons then you are a nerd.
The larping thing seems like fun to me. I'd like to try it out but I don't know any larpers. Every now and then I seem some Larping at Girard Park. Is it like pick-up basketball? Can I just show up with a brookstick and a trash can top?

My kids love Harry Potter. I enjoy the Avengers movies. I tried GOT a few years ago but I just couldn’t get into it.
That isn't really actual super nerd stuff though.
The Avengers / Superhero stuff are basically just action movies. Harry Potter is pretty basic fantasy (as it should be since its geared towards kids) and GOT is relatively light on the fantasy elements compared to a lot of stuff out there outside of having a dragon in the show and some ice zombies - magic is pretty minor in the series
ETA: Fantasy is also a pretty new genre, LOTR can be identified as the beginning of modern fantasy and that was probably about 50 / 60 years ago, Star Wars certainly contributed but I'd say the 80s/90s are when it started to come into its own.
There are lots of really good new / recent fantasy series being put out right now and over the past 15 years or so. Hopefully with the success of GOT, people will be more open to them and some will be made into other shows / movies.
