No shite. Double amputee at the hip after stepping on one last year in the middle of the night getting up to take a leak.

A bag of random legos is cheap. A complicated design of the Millennium Falcon with 5000 pieces is not. A lot of work went into designing that.

Who is paying these exorbitant prices for legos?

We've got 10's of thousands of legos at out house (closer to 100K if I was a betting man). Try to avoid buying the sets. Buy in bulk if you can. There are several why:

1) It's much cheaper.
2) The real genus of legos isn't the ability to follow direction. It's being able to create something in a child's mind. This is where the STEM aspect of legos comes into effect.

There are several places on the web were you can buy in bulk. Just do some googling and you'll find them. Before COVID I was paying about $3-$5/pound, but now it's closer to twice that (depending on the pieces in the particular lot).

The bigger more complex sets have always been super expensive

Anyone here used to also use Lincoln Logs?

Yep, used to love those things. But I always broke the green wooden slates to use for the roof. It seems I was always 2 short of a full deck for my bad arse cabin.

The price per piece has remained pretty constant over the years. Lego has never been cheap and inflation is relentless.

Just for fun, check out the price of the most expensive Lego set, the UCS Millennium Falcon.

What an a-hole thing to say. Sorry, not everyone can be rich or have a ton of credit debt.

Buy some cheap off brand from eBay. They do the same thing.

Licensing fees.

They hold their value pretty well. Don’t throw out the box.

Buy the Creator sets that build three different things. Avoid Star Wars and other sets w/ unique pieces that are hard to replace.

Side note, was gifted the off brand lego version of tiger stadium with like 3000 pieces for Christmas.

The pieces are much smaller than normal legos and the directions take some patience but it was an awesome build during covid lockdown.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard my husband curse so much in his life as he did putting this stadium together. The instructions were so hard to see, and the bags weren’t sorted like Lego. But the end result is awesome.

This.
The average price per piece has been about 10-12c per piece for at least the last 10 years that I can remember. Bulk packs are cheaper and can be had for around 9c a piece. The core line sets are around 11c per piece and the sets based on licensed IP are about 12-15c per piece.

Sets based on Disney characters are the most expensive.

They haven’t really gotten more costly, the sets have gotten more complex and are made up of more pieces and the stores have been carrying more sets based on licensed characters and designs than the regular Lego core (city, space, castle, etc.)
