So the kid should just be able to eat for free everday despite having debt?
is it the kid's debt or the parent's debt?
There are many ways to deal directly with the parent with this issue.

That's why I suggested whooping his parents arse in the town square. There needs to be some motivation for people to do what they are supposed to do. It is not the child's fault that his parents are worthless, or at a minimum, have not gotten their shite together yet.

Sure, but it comes down to the fact that if you have debt, you don't receive services. Chronic lack of payment is what likely led to this policy being implemented in the first place.

Cash paid at the end of the line was the way we did it. Helps a kid learn to keep up with his lunch money.

I don't know how this is normally dealt with as my child is not school aged yet.
I'd have the school start contacting the parents when the balance gets below like $20 or something? Maybe have the kids pay before they get their food, assuming there is a flat price per meal and you don't pay for item. Then if he doesn't have the available funds he could be told before hand that he will need to have the cheese sandwich or whatever they did provide for him.
It is just wasteful to throw away the meal they took from him. If he is supposed to be a free lunch candidate keep following up until everything is taken care of. I know a lot is on the parents, but if they can't handle this for him, then he probably has a shite home life and may not get decent meals there either.

I found a negative balance slip in my daughter's book bag today for $2.51 and it was mixed in with some papers that had been cast aside which were mostly these stupid fund raisers or ads they bombard you with early on at school so by dumb luck I saw the slip today.
The parents might not be as shitty as being led to believe and at least they aren't bullshitting and mooching to get free lunches so I say the school needs to check itself before making a-hole moves against the kid and trying to make the parents look bad to boot.

I get it.
I'm just saying that stories like this are what leads to parents not paying for their kids' meals in the future because they know they can shame the school into caving on the policy out of fear of a public black eye.
It sucks that kids have bad parents, but exacerbating the problem by not enforcing the rule isn't the solution.

So, the kid was embarrassed because he had to eat a cheese sandwich on his birthday; but the family felt it was a good idea to run to the media to put all of this out there?
Where is the journalism? How long have they been in school? How long does the enrollment process take? The way this is written makes it appear like the school completely dropped the ball on this. Also, wouldn't it be logical to have some sort of grace period if there is a long process for the free/reduced lunch program.

Bailey said when Jefferson came home with the note of negative funds, she called the school to straighten out the issue. Jefferson’s enrollment in a free and reduced lunch program had not been finalized yet.

i found the local policy for my area school district
Elementary school students may borrow 3 lunches for students on the paid eligibility. Students having borrowed for three or more meals will be given a turkey sandwich, and side dishes offered on the serving line, and milk at no charge. At no time or for any reason should a tray be taken away from an elementary student. If the elementary student arrives at the cashier station with a tray and does not have money, his/her account will be debited for reimbursable meals.
Intermediate and High School students may borrow up to the dollar amount of one breakfast and one lunch, $3.85 for intermediate students and $4.10 for high school students. A student who has exceeded the borrowing limit with no money will be offered a turkey sandwich, side dishes and milk at no charge. The manager will notify the administrator on duty when students continue to exceed the borrowing limit for an extended period.
This policy is ripe for abuse. It basically says that the district will feed your kid in perpetuity even if you don't pay. The administrator can tell the parents whatever they want, and the parents can easily point to the policy that expressly states that the kids gets a turkey sandwich, sides and milk FREE OF CHARGE.

And the kid's parents bank on that type of attitude and continue to not send any money for the kid's lunch.

Exactly. If they're big enough shitbags to not pay for their kid's lunch, exploiting this publicity for free stuff is right in their wheelhouse.

My sister put money on an account for my niece. If the balance drops below $10, they auto-charge my sister's card back to the $25 threshold. My niece usually takes her lunch, but on the odd day that she doesn't, we leave it at home or in the car, she gets lunch and there's no issue.

bullshite. It’s not the taxpayers job to feed little Johnny. That’s mom and dad’s job. If he ain’t got no dough then he don’t get any bread.
Some of y’all have gotten soft. Damn socialists.

The idea of a child not being able to eat lunch at school is so sad. I bet it went in the trash too
I don’t know how it works in other places, but at the school where my wife works if a kid’s lunch account goes into the negative more than a set dollar amount ($10 I think) the kid isn’t allowed to get a regular lunch but instead is provided an alternative lunch of a sandwich, apple, and juice box or something similar. No matter what, they provide the kid with a lunch.

The cashier at my daughter's school would give my daughter a pre-printed slip when her account got below $10. We would then transfer $100 into her account, which rolled over to her next year if there was money left at the end of the school year.
Parents who don't want to pay for their kids' lunch should be required to show up at the school and work. They can report to the janitor and get their tasks, thereby building the balance of money in their child's account. Nothing is free. Somebody has to pay for everything.

Our kids school sends out a robo-call when a kid’s account goes negative.
What’s funny is my wife told me one of the kids on free lunches is the same kid in my son’s class who got a virtually brand new Mercedes for his 16th birthday. And there is another family who gets free lunches even though the dad owns a successful gun store and the mom just got a brand new Lexus SUV.

“We are reviewing all of those specifics. We’re considering the idea of raising that debt cap from 15 to make sure that the student experience is positive in the lunch room," Niemiec said.
Looks like the debt had been piling up for awhile. Also, noticed that it was his "family" that complained, not his parents and the grandmother was quoted in the story.
Why are they feeding kids cheesy bread sticks?
If it is like our school, we put the money in online and it starts giving notifications when the amount gets close to $0.

Another thing my wife told me about lunch accounts is before they implemented the “alternative lunch” for kids with negative accounts, they would see some accounts go hundreds of dollars in the red. The largest she remembered seeing was one family who’s two kids ended the school year owing like $600 each.

free or reduced lunch kids have been shamed for 25 years.
