When are we going to stop lunch shaming young kids?

Another idiotic school policy

LINK

quote:

The family of an Ohio boy says his birthday was ruined when cafeteria workers at Green Primary School embarrassed him in front of his friends by taking away his lunch because of the school’s lunch-debt policy.

9th birthday

quote:

Jefferson came home on Friday, Aug. 30 with a note that said his account was in the negative, which is the school’s protocol. “Students receive multiple means of communication whenever their account become in the negative," said Alana Niemiec, the assistant superintendent.

The kid was 8, turning 9. Why are we communicating financial debts to a child? I would argue it's not their account... they are a child. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

maybe she meant to say she sent a note home, with the child, to the parent. But I think her language speaks volumes here.

quote:

Bailey said when Jefferson came home with the note of negative funds, she called the school to straighten out the issue. Jefferson’s enrollment in a free and reduced lunch program had not been finalized yet.

So the family might not even owe the money?

Look... if it's a legit debt, shame the parents all you want. Shaming the kid because of the adult's inabilities to handle shite is absolutely insane.

The idea of a child not being able to eat lunch at school is so sad. I bet it went in the trash too

"Lunch shaming" is a thing?

I understand a negative balance needs to be dealt with, but taking away a child's lunch should not be the answer. Not only is it embarrassing for the child, but he also needs to eat.

It is a shame that his worthless parents didn't love him enough to make sure he was fed until they got their shite together on doing the paperwork, thereby shifting the burden to others to feed their spawn.

arse whoopings for the parents in the town square?

The minimum requirement for raising children is providing food. While the situation sucks for the kid, the parents need to provide basic necessities. I'll guarantee the parents spend money on frivolous things rather than school lunch.

Fair enough... but again... no reason to take it out on the child.

One skipped meal isn't going to kill the kid. It sucks that the kid had to be embarrased but we need to stop letting these shitty parents slide all the time.

Surely the school has to supplement the kid with some kind of meal... probably a bologna and cheese sammich and an apple.
That doesn't mean the kid with a negative 100$ balance should be able to have free reign on the cafeteria either!

They took the lunch away, likely threw it away, and gave the kid a cheese sandwich.

So not only do they look stupid and shame the child, they actually also spent MORE money (probably only a few pennies, but still spent more money).

Assuming it's indeed shitty parents and not shitty administration who can't process paperwork correctly...

if a parent is this shitty to not provide a lunch / money for lunch, embarrassing the kid isn't going to fix this.

Maybe the piece of shite parents should pay their bills and this wouldn’t happen

I don't believe in punishing a child for having shitty parents. It's not his fault.

I would assume it's the latter based off my interaction with school administrators

I thought the story said the cafeteria worker took away the kid's cheesy breadsticks and sauce, and swapped it for a cheese sandwich out of the refrigerator. Did I read that wrong?

The kid still got food to eat-- he was just embarrassed.

Cash paid at the end of the line was the way we did it. Helps a kid learn to keep up with his lunch money.

Of course

So the kid should just be able to eat for free everday despite having debt?

If you read the article...
quote:

The lunch lady didn’t say anything, took away my cheesy bread sticks and sauce, put them over there, and took out bread, cheese on bread out of the fridge and put it on my lunch tray,"

The kid didnt go without lunch. The school cant just hand out free food because the shitty parents cant be bothered to be responsible enough to make sure their kid has money in his lunch account.

It's a different story if they forced him to not eat at all. I dont have a problem with the school here. Thus is on this kid's parents.

So what's the solution?

Give the kid free meals despite the debt? Why would anyone ever pay of they know there are no repercussions?
