I would have no problem with that.

We are the most giving, hospitable country on Earth. I can't imagine denying a hungry kid a free meal.
I don't have a problem with it. Just the first time I've seen free meals available to everyone even if they aren't on free/reduced. shite, my kids hit it up once in a while.

School lunch should be free. If we can't feed all of our children, we are a failure as a society.

before the "great society" brought on by LBJ..... was this a problem outside of the depression?

When you consider all of the costs involved in charging for lunch, I have to wonder if it would really be that big of a deal to eliminate all of those support costs, and just give a lunch to anyone who wants it.

You make a strong point.

That's ridiculous to do to the kid.

Public grade schools in La now offer free breakfast, free lunch and free after school snack programs. Where does it all end?

It ends with less hungry children. That's a hell of a place to end.

arse whoopings for the parents in the town square?

This is the correct answer. The school is shitty for doing that to the kids, but ultimately the parents are at fault. If nothing else, pack him a pb sandwich

Does anyone remember when a school teacher/cafeteria worker/whatever seized a kids lunch he brought from and replaced it with government approved chicken nuggets?

At first I thought that was what this thread was about.
Preschoolers home made lunch- NOT APPROVED

We had some kids that brought their own lunch every day when I was in school. Some had dietary restrictions. I never knew if anyone was too poor to afford the school lunch because the reasons people brought their own lunch wasn't discussed.

A jar of PB , a loaf of bread, a bag of apples and oranges goes a long way.

Shouldn't be up to the government to feed your kids

The minimum requirement for raising children is providing food. While the situation sucks for the kid, the parents need to provide basic necessities. I'll guarantee the parents spend money on frivolous things rather than school lunch.

Took long enough for logic to show up.

There is alot of wrong in this thread. First the USDA does not provide free lunch for students. The state provides free/reduced lunch for students who apply and qualify. If there is a balance the school is billed for it. So to the guy that complained about fundraisers, this is part of the reason. At my wife's school there was a 3,000 dollar balance of unpaid lunches towards the end of school. The only way some was paid is students couldn't go on field trips until it was paid. Still, about 1000 was paid by the school. The law in LA says that no student in Middle or Elem can be denied a lunch. That's a good law. But remember someone is still paying for it.
There is also people who wouldn't fill out the free/reduced forms until their student was denied a regular lunch. The school gets a window of 10 days for someone to get their paperwork in. After that the state won't reimburse for free/reduced. Only going forward. So you can have free/reduced lunch students with a balance that will probably never be paid. I bet that was the case here. Mom didn't fill out the paperwork in a timely manner.
