Katrina refrigerator

The stench of mold and mildew in St. Bernard Parish nearly a year after Katrina. We had to go down there for work to do some location inspections and the smell was overpowering.

rotten dead body was 2nd on my list if you can believe that.

1st was a pile of rotten dead cows on a ranch in Mexico that had been rained on and sitting in the heat for a few days. I can't believe I didn't vomit.

ETA:

Honorable mention - I had a terrible staph infection on my knee in college and when the doctor drained it the room was toxic. There was probably enough fluid and puss to fill a coffee mug. Nurse had to step out.

Not the worst smelling, but by far the worst. I worked at a printing factory in college. We had to keep the ink at a certain pH and we used industrial strength bleach to do it. I accidentally took a huge whiff of it once and it felt like my nostrils were on fire. It was so strong that it even made my eyes water/burn and my vision went black for a second until I stepped away from it.

A mercaptan. It is closely related to the mercaptan that is used to stink up natural gas, however it was NOT the stuff they use to stink up natural gas. It was natural gas stink's evil murderous cousin who never washes his a-hole and has a penchant for long hours of strenuous activity in the summer sun, and it was far more concentrated than what you think of with natural gas. Just a whiff of it from the fume hood would trigger instant retching.

I had a freezer full of chicken and seafood that spent two weeks without power after Katrina. It smelled like death and every piece of fabric in that apartment had to be thrown away and replaced (carpet, furniture, etc.) because the smell had seeped in and couldn't get out.

That freezer was like a summer breeze wafting through a citrus orchard compared to that mercaptan.

tie between an abscess we lanced on a cats stomach and a hoof that was rotting off of a horse that had foundered. Not much makes me nauseous, but those did the trick.

I'll add my neighbors freezer crapping out in July to the list. He had is filled with rabbits, hog, and shrimp. They went to Florida for vacation. Freezer went out. There was a wall of flies on the garage when we finally noticed the odor. Cleaning that thing out while they were gone was rough.

I thought the worst thing I'd ever smelled was mercaptoethanol, but that was until I smelled TEMED.

A busted shite sack while cleaning a rabbit.
Yesterday a neighbor left out a bucket of fish guts that turned into what looked like a milkshake with maggots.

I'll agree with the tonsil stone as well.

A co-worker's breath years ago....when he spoke to you up close you had to hold your breath and turn away so you wouldn't get hit with that foul odor. His wife must've not had the sense of smell...

Boiled peanuts. Left water in pot for a week.

I have never been the same since.

I had a fridge go out that was full of frozen chicken and spinach. Had nothing on the peanuts.

I had to bleach my limestone after I dumped it out.

I went to a fire department call where a fat man who lived in a bus died while taking a shite. He was totally nude and had been dead quite a few days. Neighbors noticed the smell. We had to cut the side of the bus to get him out.

THAT is the worst smell ever

Decomposing body in the middle of summer in a house with no air conditioning. That smell stays with you for a long time.
