I can’t recall a max count but at know at my peak, we’d strap 25lb weights on our waist and do sets of 10.

Now I typically start my back workouts with just 3 sets of 10 body weight. The 3rd set is a struggle to squeeze out 10. Im prob 20-30lbs heavier (fatter) than I was then so strength wise its prob a wash.

20 year difference.

Swam in college... this sounds extremely out of the norm for anything I've witnessed.

Probably sadder than your first statement.

I weighed all of 130 lbs. in HS, so I could do 20-22 with ease.

Now, I'd be lucky to do 3....

Preparing for Airborne School in 1985 I could do 15 no sway/swing pull ups.

Today: Zero. I will never do another pull-up.

In HS, there was a weekly competition with push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups and every classroom had a monitor where they would show the names of the best every week. I didn't work out or practice . My name was constantly on the leader board for push-ups and pull ups. 15 to 16 pull-ups was my max. They said it was cause I was 120 lbs. BS. Strength is strength. My arms were long.

I can do like 12 now. Almost 47 years old.

My prime was probably senior year in high school. I could do about 30. But, I was 125lbs and wrestled, so my functional strength was close to the best it's ever been.

ETA; Just noticed the post about arm length. Definitely made a difference. I've got T-Rex arms.

I was a in the upper half of athletes in my high school, but I always suuuucked at pull ups. I think the most I ever did at one time was 10 or 12. Pullups really are one of my weakest exercises for some reason. I do have semi-long arms which never helped me bench press either. But, I was at least average to above average benching. I could bench 200lbs when I weighed about 135lbs.

I just went outside and tried on a beam in my garage...I got 2 and a quarter .

Thanks for reminding me how out of shape I am.

Lol - 0 now for sure. I had it in my mind to start practicing in January as one of my resolutions - but I haven’t gone to the park with the pull up bar

In high school I played basketball and ran track - as part of our conditioning we lifted weights and did pull ups - I could maybe do 5 then?

I’m 42. I can do about 20. I workout a lot more due to fat blood and refusal to take meds. Better shape now than when younger

yea this exercise has variables galore.
I was training for a tryout with a pro rugby team the Summer after graduating LSU. At 6'3 245 lbs I could do 15 pull ups and run a 20 minute 3 mile. If I was 125 lbs, that's not very impressive.
