Chinups are a superior exercise.

That makes no physiological sense, they each engage a different primary muscle group. Chin-ups engage the biceps more and pull-ups engage the lats more and also engage the core more. Each is superior and inferior in its own way depending on what muscle groups you want to target and what your goals are. While neither are isolation exercises you might as well be arguing whether preacher curls or tricep pulldowns is the superior exercise.

I wrestled all through highschool so then I could crank out between 15-20. In college though I started doing pretty boy exercises and got really strong and did the marine pull-up challenge at the state wrestling meet (went to watch my brother) and did 22.

Now I can crank out 8 but I’m completely shot after that. 15 years later.

18-22. I could probably do 6 or 7 now, but I’m getting old. Weight less, but not as strong.

I used to strap 2 45#s on a belt and could do at least 10

Now I could probably do 2 with a 45# gut

I do pull ups errday. Three sets of 25. Best thing I have bought for workouts besides weights are my concept2 and my rouge pull up bar. Usually workout at night. But I’ll even do a set or two in the am before work. Great feels for the morning.

Going into Boot Camp I could only do 4. On the final PT with test a DI watching me I did 11 legit.

Went to Vietnam and turned to nothing so when I came home I did 20.

Now, I can’t even jump up and grab the bar. Talk about someone they would have lower the bar for to compete.

I'm not calling you out specifically as you happen to be the latest to respond to, but anyone claiming 20+ is more than likely full of shite. Elite climbers who are regularly training with weighted pull ups, one arm pullups, and offset pullups are in the 20-30 range. These are people who are incredibly lean and largely train primarily for the type of pulling that lends itself to doing a lot of pullups

It’s easily doable if you do them regularly. I stopped working out for a year and half and was drinking quite a bit and was able to three sets of ten after a few days back at it. I pretty much do them daily except days where I’m hiking, doing other exhaustive work, or drinking.

I never really thought about grip but just went out and did twenty(I’ve been drinking tonight) to make sure I was always doing pull ups vs chin ups.

I’d say it more has to do with your weight and how often you do them.

3 sets of ten is much different than one continuous go without dropping from the bar and keeping proper form. I may have misunderstood and these numbers would make more sense in that case

Maybe 20 on a finger or campus board but an even close to elite climber (even back in my trad climbing days aka the olden days) was certainly capable of 40+ on a bar. I wouldn't bet against Ron Kauk doing 50+ in his prime and certainly not Adam Ondra today.

That very well could be true. Point being there's a bunch of inflated internet bad arse numbers up in here. I wonder what Megos could do. He's supposed to be on another level from a measurable standpoint
