Don't know if it's major but the Exxon explosion is the 80s. Watching TV in my living room and heard it.

Edit- Challenger was a few years earlier, so that.

I was born in 76. The earliest “big” story I remember was the Mt. St. Helens eruption in May of 1980

In your neck of the woods I remember a sport about UW upsetting Michigan and the school having no guidelines in place led to the deaths of multiple students as the student body surged towards the field and security were idiots. (Do you remember whatever happened to that lawsuit?)

The Badgers had sucked for so long that beating Michigan was a huge deal. (This was the first Rose Bowl season under Alvarez so they were pretty good all year. 1993) There were railings at the bottom the student section and the students towards the front were being crushed against them by the students in the back trying to rush the field. The people in the back couldn't see what was happening. The rails gave way resulting in a large number of students being trampled in the rush.

I had to look it up, but 73 students were injured with 6 of them critical. No deaths but some students did require CPR. Football players were pulling people out before the rails gave way and after.

Both the security and UW were found liable but I don't recall what became of it or why the security company was liable as they wouldn't have installed the rails.

Changes were made to the rails after this and it was made easier to access the field to avoid a repeat.

Challenger or The baby that got stuck in the well. Baby Jessica if my memory serves

Both of those. I can remember hearing about Jessica on the radio news while riding with my parents in the car and watching the Challenger blow up on live TV during school.

I hate to be that guy but the OKC bombing was on 4/19/95. My daughter was born 4/20/95 so I remember it like yesterday.

Yeah, I was thinking of the other stuff below when I was typing that out and typed 20 instead of 19. But you're correct. I flubbed that one up.

The Mississippi Delta flood in 1991. Think it was in the news but I saw it first hand. The 1992 election. The earthquake drills we had in 1992ish because of some random earthquake prediction in new Madrid fault.

What’s the first memory you have of a major news story?
I am old enough to remember the moon landing, Vietnam and Watergate quite distinctly. But they were background noise that interfered with my childhood (Saturday morning cartoons, et al). But my first distinct memory was January 10th, 1972. This was the Nation of Islam riot in downtown Baton Rouge.

New York Times - Racial Tension Rises in Baton Rouge as Versions of Shootout That Killed Four Vary

As a young kid, the story of the beating of news reporter Buddy C. ' Bob ' Johnson from WBRZ-TV terrified me.

Hubbel or Gulf War. I remember that being big.

I know of things that happened before, but I was too young to remember. Learned about it later.

It didn’t bother me though.
