Olympic bombing in Atlanta. 5 years old. We went to archery and wrestling and watched the torch get carried in. Can’t think of anything major before that
I was there at the time but recall things from way before. I was already 11. I did go out with my parents and brothers to watch the torch being ran in. Went to a bunch of the US baseball games because Skip was coach.

Hurricane Audrey in 1957 and all the stories about snakes and alligators in people’s homes. I was 7 and that was creepy.
And then Billy Cannon’s return to the Baton Rouge airport holding his Heisman Trophy in 1959.

I sort of remember Elvis dying but probably the Iranian hostage crisis caused by Jimmy Biden Carter when Reagan white knighted and saved America.

I remember parents/grandparents watching the Warren Report and other things discussing JFK assassination.

I vaguely remember my parents taking me to the Rockets NBA championship parade in mid 90’s and vividly remember USA women’s World Cup in 98 but doubt those are considered major news stories
I guess princess Diana? I was born in 89 fwiw but have a pretty terrible memory

Munich Olympics, terrorists attack Israelis.
Oh yeah. I forgot that one. But I was a little kid, didn't have TV but spent that time with my grandparents. It freaked me out.

I think I can speak for the bulk of late Gen X when I say the Challenger explosion.
Followed by Baby Jessica and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Not a first memory, but the Gulf War (1st one) happened while I was in grade school, and there was talk of Baton Rouge being a potential target because of Exxon. Nothing like the fear of being bombed to keep kids in line.
