I kept hearing the words, water and gate, and had no clue what the hell it meant.

9/11. I was 10.
We were in the library at school and some of the teachers rolled out the TV and put the news on screen. I think South Tower has already fallen by this point because it was a lot of smoke. I didn’t know what the twin towers were but the teachers freaking out kinda worried me. Janitor came in crying hysterically and a staff member had to walk her out of room because she was making bunch of kids cry.

The Russians launching the "Sputnick" satelite and taking the lead in space technology. I read about it in "The Weekly Reader" at school.

Elvis being declared dead. I was 8yrs old and in the back seat of my parents' car as they were either picking me up or dropping at the babysitter's house when the news guy made the announcement that "the King of Rock-n-Roll is dead".

The combination of my parents' disappointment and the mention of a "king" caught my attention enough to stick for all this time.

This. And John Lennon. I think the most impactful was Challenger. I was old enough to try to process it.

Probably either the Howard Johnson New Orleans sniper because we had just moved to Louisiana after my dad retired from AF when it happened or Watergate.
