There’s almost zero Cajun language spoke other than by some really old coonasses. Their cooking skills and even sharp wit have been dulled over the the last 30 years. It’s starting to remind me of more of a mid western town than what I remembered to be SW LA. Anyway, people, places, & culture change with time.

That cajun culture is cool. But damn, time passes and you can't expect the young to carry on that culture and especially cajun french. If anything over time the second language of choice will be Spanish just like here in Texas. That is a demographic that is increasing and where much of the current demographic speaks the language as a primary if not second language.

Lafayette is terrible. A bunch of Jersey shore Guido meet UFC wannabees. Then you add in the 3rd world slum full of crackheads, hookers, and other bums and sleazeballs down and around the Thruway.

I actually agree with this. The boat sailed on Cajun French when my parents generation were physically reprimanded for speaking the only language they knew when in school as children. Efforts were made to change that but it was at least one generation past where the language was essentially lost.
My response was to the guy saying Lafayette tried to distance itself from the Cajun Culture. I'm 57 years old, grew up between Lafayette and Scott (when there was a between Lafayette and Scott) and Lafayette has been touting their Cajun culture as long as I can remember. The oilfield has impacted the culture a bit, but there has always been a thread of cajun running through Lafayette. And Lafayette is kind of uniquely placed and tends to be a mingling point for the Prairie Cajun and Swamp Cajun cultures, which vary more than you might think.

This post, added to the one about nothing but chain restaurants, just reinforces my view that in life, we often only see what we EXPECT and WANT to see.

yep, Lafayette is a cool little town, in fact so are most of the little surrounding areas, just have to get to know your way around, probably not going to do that in one day
