The accent is like a vestigial organ, though. Most of those folks probably never spoke a word of cajun french that wasn't some catch phrase that gets often repeated. Effectively, the accent is passed down but the language isn't. I'm from Lafayette and occasionally lapse myself. I had a few teachers that encourage proper enunciation and I have worked at it. Alcohol used to bring the accent back at times. Old age seems to be doing it too.
I gotta admit, though, I do like the accent. It's like a comfort thing to me now.
The wife and I are contemplating getting a place on a large reservoir on the Texas/Louisiana border.
