re: What’s the big deal with Lafayette

My response was to the guy saying Lafayette tried to distance itself from the Cajun Culture. I'm 57 years old, grew up between Lafayette and Scott (when there was a between Lafayette and Scott) and Lafayette has been touting their Cajun culture as long as I can remember. The oilfield has impacted the culture a bit, but there has always been a thread of cajun running through Lafayette. And Lafayette is kind of uniquely placed and tends to be a mingling point for the Prairie Cajun and Swamp Cajun cultures, which vary more than you might think.
I went to school there and lived there while working the oil patch. I can assure you once gone, that dialect is recognizable and persists. I was recently fishing on a large reservoir on the Texas/Louisiana border. There were a bunch of Louisiana people there on vacation. They were from the Lafayette and Lake Charles areas in different groups. And I can still hear that sweet cajun accent when they speak. And all of them; the whole lot of Louisianaians there were passing a real good time!

I just spent a day here and it feels like a carbon copy of Alexandria with a faux Cajun French culture. Chain fast-food joints galore and nothing to really do after dark. Am I missing something or is this it?

You mean an area of similar to where your foundation is?

The accent submerges when people move away. Then when they come back, gardez donc! It resurfaces in about thirty seconds.

No. It's above the foundation. Like an underground attic.

Bunch of people mad that they can’t afford to live in River Ranch and drive their lifted golf carts to Rhythms on the River and head to Ruffinos after. Lol y’all should have got in the oil patch early and sold at the top like me.

Getting that New Iberia haircut has to lower your IQ to somewhere between a banana and a turnip.

Diat lives in Opelousas. He was so excited about Cane’s coming there that he posted about it for months. Poor soul.
And he had the audacity to talk about crackheads in Lafayette ? Opelousas is essentially N Baton Rouge, nothing but thugs, crackheads, criminals, and cultcha

The pulled pork burrito at Taco Sisters is the best I've ever had.

Really though. If you want really good food in either of those places, you gotta go to someone’s house.
Really though, you’re telling me that professionals cannot pull off better or at the very least equal food quality than a weekend warrior?

Clever. You from Louisiana??

You and your friend aren’t doing it right. You’re in peak crawfish season and go to Olive Garden?

The GOAT.
Try their brisket taco or salad or smoked chicken taco or salad.
They have been serving grilled sheepshead instead of tuna lately.

When you’re going out in Lafayette, you gotta look your best.
This, is very true. Lafayette guys have a 'look' about them moreso than most other places. They all care way too much about their looks and try way too hard to sound like they're more Cajun than they really are. I know Cajun, both my parents are from Ville Platte. That's Cajun, yeah.

This is spot on
Laffy folks try really really hard.

I always get a laugh when people say that. Hear it a lot with steaks

Yeah, the epitome of it is River ranch. River ranch is so opposite of north Lafayette, that it's equivalent in trashy. It's the extreme fake/keeping up with the Jones.
