What's the best way to tell a close friend they suck and it's time to move on?

And before someone says to walk up and say to them "bruh you suck, time to move on", it's much more complicated than that. This is his dream but it's not happening.
He plays two local bars, one in particular all the time, because none of the other places will pay him to come back. Spends hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on trips to Nashville trying to get noticed, even recorded a couple songs that sound like they were recorded in someone's bathroom.
Our group of friends humor him, let him break out the guitar at parties and sing, while we all silently look at each other and smile, like got damn. I really don't know what to do, it would be pissing on his dream, but we have all reached the conclusion it's time. He has thrown every penny he's got at this music dream and it's been painful to watch. He's terrible.
He's been my boy since we were kids. Do I STFU or have a sit-down?

Tell him flat out. When reality hits him, be there for him. He probably has no other skills that translate so will need some support.

Although, you could tell him he sucked and still support him. That's what friends do.

Honestly, there is probably nothing you can tell him that will get him to stop. He will get pissed at you because you don't believe in him and he will just have to figure it out himself.. Maybe don't encourage him to play when with a group of friends.. Eventually he will get the point.

does he owe you money or something? if not then just let him chase his dream. you cant live his life.
