Who the frick are you to crush his dream? Unless he's asking you for money or sleeping on your couch, shut the frick up.

If he asks your honest advice... give it to him. If not, let him chase his dream (unless he has a wife and kids he is hurting in the process).

I was in your shoes a long time ago with a buddy of mine. I was the one that broke the news to him. He used it as fuel. His name is Bruce Springsteen, and I am not in the E street band anymore

You're his friend. You see his delusion. He doesn't. You can play jab and compare his skills at making money with his instrument and razz him yada yada... but i mean, i wouldn't tell him to wake up and smell the roses unless he asks you. IF he asks you directly, then you get the go ahead to be honest. just state it as "of course my musical opinion is probably worthless, but just sayin."

oops, meant to add more before posting but w/e the point is there. a friend's job is to love a friend regardless of flaws. besides, it WILL all be a joke one day if he has any measure of reality about it whatsoever. it's his business until he makes it yours. best of luck!

What's the best way to tell a close friend they suck and it's time to move on?

He tried out for The Voice, he even had a few of us come with him. Didn't get past the first lady with the clipboard and we left.

let the guy chase his dream! <3
you've got one life to live... if i had any dreams whatsoever i wouldn't want someone holding me back or being negative.
you should ask him if there's anything you can do to help.
and you should spend more time chasing yours!
i should spend more time chasing mine....
frick, i'm feeling wholesome today.

Upload his recordings to Soundcloud. Tweet the SC link to Simon Cowell and ask if he’ll listen. Wait for him to reply back about how awful it sounds. Show the tweet to your friend. Then he’ll know his music sucks, but Simon gets to be the a-hole instead of you

If his finances are your main concern, then just talk to him about his thoughts on his career if his music doesn't pan out.
Help him find a job (career path) to pay the bills, while he works on his dream as a hobby.

The OT. Say here's my friend who's really good or something in the OP so it looks like you're a fan. Let the OT take care of the rest.

What genre of music? If country, sleeping on his dads couch and his truck blowing smoke might make a good song. He could write another song about his dick friends that told him he sucks and to give up on his dreams. He might turn into the next Stapleton with that kinda inspiration.

Tape him and make him listen to his own music

Good advice for any inspiring musicians. Its so easy to record yourself nowadays but some refuse to. Lots of people would have a change of dreams after realizing how bad they suck.

Professional musician here.
Talent doesn’t mean as much as hard work. What’s he bad at? Timing? Hitting wrong notes? Getting drunk before playing?
Talk to him about streams of income and networking with other musicians. Don’t kill his dream but as a friend, make sure he’s taking care of himself as he pursues this. He might need to learn that becoming a star isn’t the only way to make a living as a musician.
