You are his uncle and you don’t know what he likes? Somebody mentioned Legos which would be great for my 5 year old but wasted on my 4 year old.
Go to the toy section and look for anything you might want to play with your nephew and do that. He is 4 or 5. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, it’s your job as the cool uncle to help him have fun with whatever you get him.

Bingo. Got my niece and nephew a couple last year and they were great. Adults loved them too. Just make them wear eye protection because those things move.

Back in 1975, I gave my 5-year-old neighbor boy a rope. Went to the hardware store and bought about 15 feet of rope. He loved it. Thought up endless ways of playing with it. His mom told me he slept with it.
I know 2019 people will flay you alive if you buy a rope. But kids that age love simple stuff: gigantic empty boxes, pots and pans, etc. I agree with the poster who suggested a bag of balls.

I get the Hess toy truck for my son every year. It is good quality and he loves it. However it is $35, but comes with batteries installed and ready to play.
It is a tow truck this year.

What did you like as a kid?
There you go. Really easy to shop for 5 year old boys. My nephews it takes 10 minutes to find Christmas gifts. Now nieces...that is brutal. No clue what they want always have to call for help.

Cheap Uncle here. Preferably under $15.Thanks.
Take him to Hooters.
Who knows, maybe in spite of being related to a cheap Ole Miss fan, he’ll end up being heterosexual?

My kid is 3 but he loves RC cars. Can’t really control them yet so should be great for 4-5 y/o
Also second including the batteries so they can play right away
