In keeping with the plans to emulate NOLA in BR, such as the road diet to turn Government Street into Magazine Street, the city has decided to put University Lakes on a water diet, channelize them and turn them into the 17th Street Canal.

Looks like Whitney Vann is trying to bring some attention to this....whatever happened to the dredging plans?

Get a FEMA grant and let the Cajun Navy use it for training.

I was out there yesterday and saw a lot of garfish swimming amongst the oxygen depleted sludge

Only a plan, no money to go the plan.

Saw an interview with a BREC official regarding the terrible condition of City Park Lake on the news a few weeks ago.
She seemed like she couldn’t care less about resolving the issue.

$$$$
Isn’t a priority of any single org, unfortunately.

BREC is about to sink big $$$ in NBR for the Zoo and redoing the park. They still planning to rent boats?

BREC is sitting on millions of dollars that could be used to fix this. They built liberty lagoon. They recently sold over a millions dollars in acres off of Nicholson. They just hoard all of the taxpayer money for their little special interest. They have a whole building with free games that only BREC employees go to because only BREC employees know about it. It’s disgusting.

They had talked about this 5 years ago or so in order to deepen the lakes and prevent more fish kills and such. I thought it had gone out to bid.
Anyone heard word on this lately?
Someone told them how many thousands of truckloads of muck would have to be hauled out and disposed of.
For reference one acre foot of DRY dirt is right at 45,000 cubic ft.

BRAF knows a proposed tax to JUST fix the lakes would probably be successful so they want to add self-serving projects (i.e. another useless building downtown) to any ballot initiative.

Huey P III stonewalled it.

BREC doesn’t own the lakes and they aren’t BREC’s responsibility and BREC doesn’t have near enough money they are “sitting on” to complete a project of this size.
The “hoarding” they do is because the tax for BREC is a dedicated tax. You don’t like it, go to the polls next time it is up for renewal and vote against it. It’s how this works.

SWB funnelled the funds to midnight basketball games, catered lunches and WIFI connection for Gravy.
Don't forget that a few peeps in her staff needed some new SUV's and Benz since their leases were almost up.

Maybe load it onto barges in the Miss and ship it down to the marshes to fight coastal erosion?

Like everything else in Louisiana - the government has given away cash to bullshite causes instead of helping maintain the things that matter to the people who live there.
BREC and the state won’t do anything until the lakes become a major eyesore. By then the costs would have skyrocketed.

I go to the polls every time. I’m trying to get the public awareness of BREC’s fortunes out there. They are sitting in a ton of money just like the library board/system.
As far as BREC not owning the lakes, you might be right. However, city park and the beach area at Acadian/Stanford are both owned and directly next to the Lakes.
