Back in my day we had this thing called a belt. But I guess parents these days don’t know about that since I see so many sagging pants around

easily one of your best attempts, as of late... so many of your others have completely fallen flat, i was starting to worry about you...

It's his decision just give him support in whatever decision he makes. But I would tell him he needs to have a talk with his coach letting the coach know he isn't having fun playing any more and he is considering not coming back to play next year and just ask him for advice. The coach will either try to talk him out of quitting and maybe do that job for you or confirm that he's making the right decision.

I wonder where he got the idea that if he as not starting, it wasn't worth playing?
Also, it sounds like he doesn't have any friends on the team, because if he did, he would probably not want to quit.
Anyway, I would ask him to take a few weeks to reconsider, and if he wants to quit, tell him that he is required to participate in another type of extracurricular.

Parents should encourage their kids to work hard at what they want to do, but not force them to do anything particular.

I had an acquaintance who pushed his son very hard to playing baseball at the college level. Every time we were hanging out with them, he was just quizzing or ragging on this kid about his pitching. Once his kid got to a small college, he flunked out purposely and lost his scholly. He literally hated baseball in the end. His dad couldn't make it as an athlete so he was determined his kid would. I felt bad for the kid.

If they don't have passion for it, stay tf out of it, parents. You know who don't over-pressure their kids to become elite athletes? Elite athletes.

He sounds like a pretty good kid. If he is in school, working, and working out, I don't see a lot of idle time there.

Why don't you ride this season out and then see what he says. I wouldn't make him play next year, but kudos to him for not wanting to stop before the season is over.

Our on plays football and our position has always been that if you commit to playing you have to finish the season. After that, it’s up to him whether he wants to continue…but he has to decide before the next season starts.

Varsity sports are too much work to force a kid to play and frankly if he doesn’t want to do it he’ll never pass the kids that love it and practice all the time

Let your son do something else he has interests in. I wish I had I taken guitar lessons when I was that age. This shouldn't even be a topic to ask advice on.

I can relate to your son. Played basketball in high school. I was very good, but didn't have that killer instinct to be better and ultimately, it was just a game to me. By the end of my sophomore year, I was having way more fun hanging with friends who weren't on the team, and of course dating girls.

I wasn't going to play at the next level, and didn't have the real interest to play anymore in high school. Combine that with a crappy coach who didn't remotely make it fun, and I was done and never looked back.

I got good grades and enjoyed my junior and senior year.

Used to whip some serious arse in PE also

A parent should be proud of their son if this is what they want to focus on. It's high school, let the kid enjoy what he likes if its not a certain sport.
