Force his arse. He definitely won't resent you for forcing him to do something he doesn't want to do.

What do you mean? You’re not thinking of like forcing him to play are you?
ETA: I see you are. How would that work? Sounds insane and overboard, not to mention highly ineffective. Sure there’s a chance he may get back onboard with some coercion but much bigger chance it’ll cause huge resentment and more turmoil than worth it.

I think he should get some credit for knowing the right thing to do is finish the season.

Finish what he started this year, then y’all can talk it out in the off season.

High school is the time to find out what you are interested in. He has given basketball an honest try and that is not his thing. Work, working out, and school doesn’t sound like a bad option.

That is the route I choose. I ultimately got an engineering degree from LSU and had a damn fine career for the past 30 years.

I’m big on don’t quit commitments. So completing the season is a must. But if his hearts not in it, not enjoying it, etc then it’s not helping forcing them to play. Burnout is real. And if he misses it then he can go back and play again. But I wouldn’t be too worried about idle time if he’s gonna work in the time he would be playing basketball.

Honestly sounds like you raised a fine young man while simultaneously being a bitch. Congrats

This sounds reasonable:
quote:

He wants to complete this season and be done with it. He just wants to workout, work, and do school.

This sounds like you are trying to relive your high school glory days through your son:

I might just make him play. What the heck does a teenage boy know about what is best for him.

You made some good points but didn’t need to brag.

I totally get that; however, it’s not like he signed a contract or will “let the team down” (from what it sounds like), so who's the injured party here, you?
Plus he’d be wasting pretty valuable time at practice and games better spent otherwise. School, work, fitness or even chilling.

Disown him. Basketball is that important.
