Extra set of keys solves all this and tells the boss to go frick himself at the same time.

So if a restaurant is in walking distance what's stopping someone from going to a two hour lunch everyday?

Simple solution. Suggest to the boss that in lieu of keeping keys, to set up a sign-in/out sheet at the front desk. Employees retain freedom. Boss can monitor time.

Go buy a "replacement key" and give that to the boss as your main key.

Quit, that's grounds for a lawsuit against the employer.

I would never work for an employer that thought this was okay.

They have had issues with people leaving early in the past

Then they need to nut up and fire those people if it's been made clear that leaving early is not acceptable.

He's about to quit

After I had another job lined up, this is exactly what any sane person would do.

Attorneys are struggling to get jobs and this dude happens to have the worst employees on the planet. He must be paying them minimum wage or some shite.

I wouldn't work there and I'd notify the department of labor.

I'd find a new job. When you say boss, do you mean that it is his firm? If so, I guess he can make the rules, but he is going to find himself with only crappy employees.

I have always believed that the less you trust your employees, the more trouble you will have. Personally, I hate having a start/quitting time. Employ a flex time type policy. Establish a practice where getting your work done on time is the important aspect, not being there between a set time. If you have an employee who can get their work done in 80% of the time it takes someone else, why should he have to sit there wasting time just waiting on the clock. On the other hand, if you have an employee who can't get his shite done on time, maybe he needs to stay later to finish up and not just drop his pencil on the desk when the clock says to.

Of course, those of you McD's employees, you just make your fries between your set work hours and stay off crack.

I'd tell him to go frick himself. If he didn't like it, he could fire me and pay me unemployment.

Then again, I'm usually the one the boss has to tell to call it quits for the night

I mean, it's a token policy. It doesn't really do anything other than act as a cheap timeclock. An employee can still, at any time, come demand their keys back. It's just notifying management that they are leaving, which is well within managment's right to know. Just go ask for your keys at lunch, and you'll get them.

If everyone did this every day, I am sure that policy would be dropped pretty quick due to the time the boss would have to spend issuing and collecting keys.

Then it would be a good response. If the boss is dumb enough to enact such a policy, show him why it won't work.

Then tell the cheap a-hole to purchase a time clock system.
