I have a friend who works in this law office. They have had issues with people leaving early in the past. When they get into work now they must give their car keys to their boss (who is a lawyer). They don't get their keys back until 5:00 (when it's time for everyone to leave).

My friend said they have plenty of restaurants within walking distance for lunch. He's about to quit. He went to HR and they basically ignored him. What would the OT do in this situation?

I would have a sit down with the boss. if he didn't drop that rule he would get dropped. then I would sue him for the pain in my fist

Sounds like a match made in Heaven. Shitty employees for a shitty boss.

I would tell them go frick themselves. I don't understand how they can make you stay for your lunch break.

What an awful policy. So bad, I have a hard time believing it.

I mean, it's a token policy. It doesn't really do anything other than act as a cheap timeclock. An employee can still, at any time, come demand their keys back. It's just notifying management that they are leaving, which is well within managment's right to know. Just go ask for your keys at lunch, and you'll get them.

Seems like push back would come from those guilty of leaving too often. It's tupid, and extremely overkill. And there are far better solutions. But it's no that big of a deal.

The same is done for cell phones at some employers

I didn't believe him at first until I went over to his house and one of his coworkers was there and verified this stupid policy

The boss could fire or suspend the offenders. I guarantee you they won't do it again and he wouldn't have to employ these dumb tactics and treat them like children.

Try to not work at a shitty company would be a good start.
I worked at a place right after college where at one time they had an admin wal around with a clip board and a spreadsheet checking off who was at their desk in the morning t start time.'
Pathetic

Shitty employees will still find a way around this.

Most people have spare keys.

A better approach would be to compensate people for working hard and let people go when they don't work hard.

As a rule, lawyers have no financial sense and no management sense. The ones capable of handling their own business affairs are extreme outliers.

This.

He doesn't want to fire the offenders, or is too scared to. so he treats everyone like the lowest common denominator.

Does the boss not have a timing system? If these lawyers are paid on salary, the firm should have them doing so many hours per year. If you're not meeting those hours, you're not getting bonuses or increases in your salary.

This is almost up on par with this oilfield company I once worked for. They had an assistant shop foreman who would time employees' bathroom breaks. No one naps in the shitter stalls anymore...
