This is true. I've done 2.5 months involving most national parks out west and 3 months that got us to Prudhoe Bay. You just can't do TGNAR in 2-3 weeks; just too much to see. But it has to be mostly west of the Mississippi and include Glacier NP, the Canadian Rockies, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Utah, and Big Bend.

Did this in 3 weeks as a kid. Went from gwoegia to California and back through the mid west. Stayed in some locations 3-4 days, others were brief stops. It worked

Try Seattle to Tahoe
Tahoe to Yosemite
Yosemite down the coast to San Diego.
Saves some time and back tracking plus would allow you to maybe go see some giant redwoods at sequoia.

I'd hit a bunch of national parks and camp a night in each. Start at Acadia, south to Shenendoah and Smoky Mountains, then head west to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia and then hit Death Valley and the Grand Canyon on my way back East.

2-3 weeks really wouldn't be enough time, but If that's all a I had I'd spend it on Harley going through the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Or maybe at Thor's Well then Redwood Forest down to San Fran then across to Lake Tahoe and down to Yosemite but I always wanted to drive Hwy1 all the way down to San Clemente.

Vehicle: Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel. It gets good gas mileage (>30mpg highway), but still roomy and comfortable enough to make a long roadtrip with ease.
I actually have different destinations because I have 2 different ultimate summer road trips planned:
1. Leave NELA and head up the Ms River. Catch a cards game in STL and a night out on the town. Then head west to Yellowstone and do that. Then head over to Seattle before heading down the Pacific Coast Highway. Stopping in Portland, SF, and LA. Then head back across the desert stopping in Las Vegas, Austin, and end it in NOLA before heading back to NELA.
2. Leave NELA and head up to Mn and see the start of the Ms River, head over to Chicago and catch a Cubs game. Head to detroit and take in the urban plight before heading over to Canada (I know its not American) and then stop in Toronto. Go to Niagara falls and head back down the east coast stopping at the major places along the way to Orlando and then head back stopping at Destin for a few days. Purposedly skipping Boston, NYC, and Miami. Not against those cities,(except f**k trying to drive in NYC) they just deserve their own trips and with 2 weeks I don't have enough time to do them right.

Drive to Yellowstone, go up to Glacier, cut over to Seattle, drive down the coast, hit up Redwood National Forest, drive down to Yosemite, quick stop in Vegas, stop by the Grand Canyon, drive home on Route 66.
ETA: I'd drive a 4 door Jeep Wrangler.

Over to San Diego and up PCH then across to Montana and down thru Wyoming and Utah and back to Texas either thru Colorado or New Mexico depending on the time of year.
