What would New Orleans be like today if Katrina hadn’t happened?

Almost all cities are gentrifying into condo-ized brewery and small plate playgrounds for millennials these days, even places like Detroit that some thought would never bounce back.

The aftermath of Katrina brought a lot of outsiders who stayed, and the general coverage of the aftermath put New Orleans on a lot of people’s radars which eventually helped turn Bywater, etc to a landing zone for people from New York and California.

Where do you think New Orleans would be now if the hurricane had never happened? Would it be in about the same place as it is now, as unique cities are being flocked to by younger generations? Or would it be making positive growth like Memphis, OKC, Birmingham, but like those places still be a few notches behind most decent sized cities in the US?

Katrina was a bath that New Orleans needed IMO.

It’s really sad the saints didn’t stay in San Antonio

If the saints left what would y’all get cringey tattoos of? Cowboys?

I’m a frequent visitor, and like NYC after 9/11, the locals are nicer to tourists after Katrina

Except to the tourists who walk down the wrong streets after midnite, that’s the same

You think the people that left New Orleans after Katrina are driving around Baton Rouge?

The problem is that it was a bath for the citizens but turned into a cesspool for the politicians due to the money. City was in an awesome position to turn a corner and become a powerhouse in the south again. Instead the political corruption kept NOLA doing business as usual.

How in the heck did Katrina negatively affect Houston and Baton Rouge ? You’re city problems were coming anyway. Houston is going to be in a huge dive for decades on end with the new Hispanic culture that’s fixin to gobble it up. The entire state of Texas with be majority Hispanic by 2020. Hard working people but will feel entitled and become government dependent within 15 years. Texas will be a shithole place with quickness and they’ll wish it was 2006. New Orleans is an impressive mix of people and historic culture that is a model for the future. I’m over 60 and New Orleans is booming and more impressive than any time in my lifetime. Love it and it’s better than ever. The other cities mentioned here are spiraling downward fast

There was a post her earlier in the week about New Orleans accents disappearing, and Katrina accelerated that.
