exactly. Most cities in the eastern half of the U.S. have such shite going on internally and its always childish racial or income related power struggles that everyone ignores the real problems and thus why their towns suck and people leave. New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Mobile, Montgomery...no way even if I made 6 figures would I ever live in any of those dumps. Even here in Washington...a rapidly growing state population-wise.. Everett laid off hundreds of employees despite rapid population growth all around..why..cause their government is incompetent.

Are you talking about the City of Everett, Snohomish County, or Boeing? What layoffs are you making reference to?

That’s pretty fricked, man.

How? I love New Orleans and everything about it. Katrina gave the rest of the country a new perspective on New Orleans. Although we could’ve done more, Katrina gave us the opportunity to become a powerhouse city in the south again.

And that opportunity was thrown away. Not a surprise I guess.

Did you expect a city in La to really change all that much?

And for you that really care, Nola is better than it's been in 50 years. Yes it's not great, but better.

The city pushed over 300 people into early retirement. Everett has such a massive drug problem to boot not to mention the droves of mental issue folks living there. And now with the Boeing debacle causing furloughs..not a great time to be in Everett.

New Orleans is doing much better now than it was during the 20 years before Katrina. That is a fact. Is that partially due to the diasporic and other effects of Katrina? Probably. But a lot of the recent success also has to do with the national population trend back into cities and out of the suburbs. Old cities with history, good food, architecture, etc have a distinct advantage over newer cookie cutter urban areas.

That post by Picayune was pure gold, btw.

People may be too young to understand just what an absolute shithole Orleans Parish was before Katrina. That storm allowed us to reset our schools, polIce, healthcare (Charity was a fricking disgrace), housing, tourism, etc.

Some of the suburbs do have more crime now.

Hindsight being what it is... we realize that the great business executive Ray Nagin was simply an affirmative action figurehead that "ran" the local division of a monopoly. We were so desperate for fresh blood that we annointed him to something he could never be,
