According to the New York Times, in the 1960s and 1970s, the typical car reached its end of life around 100,000 miles, but due to manufacturing improvements such as tighter tolerances and better anti-corrosion coatings, in the 2000s the typical car lasts closer to 200,000 miles.[4]

So double the price of purchasing a car for double the mileage, comes out even. But now the cost to fix cars is out of control too and isn't as easy as on the older vehicles.

Wasn't picking on NIH, the guy's a style trendsetter.

I think the perception, given to us by the media, is that we, as a nation, overspend and don't pay our bills.

In fact, the average FICO score is above 700, the highest in history.

Yet we hear things like ," 1M Americans are late on their car payments!".

Without context, that is a ridiculous statement.

Sorry for the hijack.

Does OwakandeO have some abundant source of a valuable raw material that allows them to sell it to 1-5 and the profits are so great that the ruling class is willing to share it with the general populace?
Is OwakandeO producing its own food? What do the people do if there isn’t industry driving it?

Owankandeo is probably a service economy. They may produce some goods on their own, but the service sector is probably the primary source of jobs and income.

Btw, i see what you did there. But many countries are predominantly service economies. The US is mostly a post industrialized service economy. The difference with the US is that it has a great manufacturing base, but that doesnt make a large share of the jobs.

The tech, energy and health care sectors drive our economy.

Let me clarify. Admittedly "service economy" may be the wrong term.

Those industries you mentioned (save for energy if your referring to oil and gas) are filled with collegiate or vocational professionals.

They are providing a service for a client.

The US economy would crash if everyone followed the 10 commandants.

Maybe at first, but as people spend modestly, they tend to save more money and aren't as reliant on the government.

Cutting into the overall spending by the government would make the economy better

This is the key, right here.

I remember when one part was fiscally conservative. Now both parties spend like drunken sailors.

It appeared as though you were trying to make a reference to Wakanda.

OwakandeO

Granted, i have so many issues with the fictional nation of Wakanda that i could easily make my own thread. It isnt about what Africans could do, but more about how contradictory their development would be in a realistic context.

fr33 I doubt if I still have it, I'll try to look for it, but I am pretty sure I threw away all of my college stuff away years ago.

In re to cars, i’m not sure if they’re built to last as long as the cars of the 50s or 60s.. my guess is that they’re better, and will go 250k or 300k miles if cared for properly.. but what i do know is that cars of today are infinitely better in terms of creature comforts; i made sure that my last vehicle came with a rearview camera, which makes parking and backing out a breeze.. it also came with remote start (#humblebrag) which I didn’t even realize i needed- but now i love being able to crank the AC from a distance a few minutes before i get in on a 105 degree day.

The problem that creates is that most people start wanting the latest and greatest when looking for cars.. i’m already on the lookout for my next vehicle and want it to have the ‘power liftgate’ where the back of the SUV raises or lowers with the push of a button.. i really want to get off the new car payment hamster wheel, so it helps if you can figure out ‘wants’ versus ‘needs’, which i’m trying to do.. going to try to stay with my 2012 vehicle for the next 10 or 15 years if i can.

10 years with my '09 right now. I'm sincerely hoping I can get another 10 out of it, but I'll be happy with another 5-7 years.

I maintain a AAA membership just in case I need the 100 miles of included towing.
