What Would Happen To The US Economy If Everyone Lived Modest?

The biggest part of our economy is retail with auto sales playing a big part.
So how much would it hurt our economy if everyone decided to keep their vehicles as long as possible?
And people start living more modest in general. People start building smaller homes to reduce cost, people stop eating out as much, people stop buying the latest and greatest gadgets that is cool to have, but isn't really needed, etc?

It would be like the 1960s, with better technology

I’m too modest to admit I know the answer to these questions.

Armageddon. 4% GDP growth is booming. A 20% decrease would be catastrophic.

We're a debt-laden infinite growth pyramid scheme.

There would be a dip at first, but eventually it would thrive.

Well if vehicles were made like they used to be people would keep them longer.
God damn you’re a fricking idiot.

What you just described is the basis behind socialism.
Simple answer: it would tank cash flow which is needed in any economy.

Sounds like something a poor person that receives a government check would say.
You want a bigger check at the beginning of each month?

The economy would be fine if this happened gradually, say, over the course of a generation.
If it happened next year, then we’d all be royally screwed.

While that might be the case in some instances, people didn't drive as much as they do today so that helped them have a longer life.
And are you saying people do wait until they need a vehicle instead of wanting a new vehicle... to buy a new vehicle?

You do realize that the population is growing and that auto sales have stagnated and are declining in many instances, right?
Well, obviously you don’t.

In away you can argue that our economy has a socialist theory to it.
It is dependent on everyone to spread their wealth by buying a bunch of shite.

The business in after-market parts would be a lot bigger, which means that factories supplying the current car manufacturers would still be pretty busy as cars continued to break down even if people aren't spending $80K on 72 month financing for the new Deluxe Truck Nuts Ford F-250.
By contrast, the "Cash For Clunkers" event under Obama not only didn't really create any additional sales of new cars (it only moved already planned sales forward a few months), it ended up killing the used car market and hurt sales in aftermarket parts that would have been used to maintain those cars.

I am well aware of that, but even with stagnant sales auto sales is still a big part of the retail industry.

Says the guy spouting the dumbest shite about cars. A car built today outlasts those from years ago by multiple times. It is one of the consumer products that has shown extreme growth in reliability/dependability over the last 50 years.
