It actually can’t.

Socialism is government controlled and planned economic activity. That has nothing to do with the economy being reliant on consumer spending.

Armageddon. 4% GDP growth is booming. A 20% decrease would be catastrophic.

without the gold standard, yeah. we're incentivized to spend. not save.

While that might be the case in some instances, people didn't drive as much as they do today so that helped them have a longer life.

Personally I drive 40k-50k miles a year and have been trading in my trucks every 2-3 years for the past 20 years.

I’d say I drive more than the average person but I wouldn’t say I’m that much above average

In away you can argue that our economy has a socialist theory to it.

It is dependent on everyone to spread their wealth by buying a bunch of shite.

Says the guy spouting the dumbest shite about cars. A car built today outlasts those from years ago by multiple times. It is one of the consumer products that has shown extreme growth in reliability/dependability over the last 50 years.

Shut up stupid

Everything these days aren’t made to last.

That includes vehicles

Once Chinese Steele entered the manufacturing industry everything got cheap and cheap.

Nothing is built to last like it used to.

I think to answer the OP’s question, it would probably be bad overall for the economy if people started living frugally.. but in the real world today, as it exists, if you (as an individual), can live frugally, keep your car longer, save more money- you’ll be infinitely better off than your neighbor down the street who’s trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Personally, i try to live a minimalist lifestyle where i can (LSU season tickets excluded, ha).. but i think the more ‘basic’ you can live, the better off you’ll be and generally happier, as well.

This is true when it comes to home appliances, but when it comes to vehicles if you think they are all built to not last long you are an idiot.

There was nothing worth a frick built between 1983 and 2000, even after that it took a few years for good reliable vehicles and vessels to rebound.

You do realize that the population is growing and that auto sales have stagnated and are declining in many instances, right?

that means more people are living where they don't need cars I guess... And fewer teenagers driving which makes the road safer

Holy shite...this is actually a decent thread.

Good on you wheels.

Easy credit is ruining this country. It’s inflated the prices of everything while simultaneously making our work worth less.

Because saving up for a luxury purchase isn’t the norm anymore, people don’t value things as much and go into a cycle of debt buying overpriced things they don’t need with money they don’t have.

And don’t get me started on student loans and the skyrocketing cost of tuition for increasingly worthless degrees.

Whoever designed this system of debt slavery knew what they were doing

Oh yeah the bells and whistles are definitely much better.

The overall build of the body, engine, and bones, are not.

I blame the unemployed soccer moms

What you just described is the basis behind socialism.

What?

No, it categorically isn’t.

Voluntarily living within your means and not spending frivolously isn’t socialism.
