You can be happy almost anywhere, but it depends on you. Good people live all over this country and the planet. Most people are miserable because they are miserable people.

Most people leave because there is a better opportunity elsewhere. Not because anywhere is better.

When I was a youngster, we would visit grandparents in the Florida panhandle every summer. I vowed to live there once I became an adult. I did and have enjoyed the life here

To the OP: No final straw, but La being 50th in everything got really old to me. Living in a top 5 state really is all it's cracked up to be.

I can make friends anywhere, but all the family is in Louisiana. That's why it is home to me. (most friends are still here too).
I think the cons would outweigh the pros if I tried to live 3+ hours away from the people I choose to spend my free time with.
If I didn't have family/friends in Louisiana and had the option to relocate, I would be open to it. I've had multiple friends in their 30s/40s who relocated from Louisiana for the main reason of "F Louisiana" and some of them have confided in me that they wouldn't have moved if they could do it over again.

No place I’d rather be, issues and all. Huge extended family that are some of my best friends. A beautiful home in a beautiful neighborhood that I could probably never afford if it was in one of the top markets. Always something fun going on either here in BR, or nearby in NOLA or Lafayette. Heat sucks, but it gets just as hot in TX, TN, GA, FL, NC, etc.
I lived away for years, including some “popular” states, and none of what they offer could substitute for what I personally felt I was missing back home in LA.

Not the reason I left, but I suspect rising homeowners and flood insurance rates would have me looking if I were still there.
I had a small house, built in the 1920s, near the levee, that has never had water in it.
When I left in 2023, my combined annual insurance premiums would have been about $4000.

But back towards the end of my time (80's) in Louisiana the corruption was just depressing actually. And all of it can be traced back to one man - Edwin W. Edwards........Fast Eddy. For example: I recall a very respectable
man (A Republican) from South Louisiana telling me of an incident involving the CEO of a major auto manufacturing company and Edwin Edwards.
The Auto Manufacturng company was looking to build an auto assembly plant somewhere along the gulf south. Absolutely, that would have meant hundreds of jobs for the state lucky enough to land the facility. And one of those sites under consideration? The old Navy Auxillary Air Station north of New Iberia. So the CEO flies his jet to the abandoned Air Station for a tour of the base. Edwin Edwards is there to greet him. After the tour the CEO returns to his jet so as to fly off to tour other sites along the gulf south. So the CEO stands at his jet and prepares to leave. But he has one more conversation with Fast Eddy. And it is then Edwin W. Edwards (aka Fast Eddy) asked the CEO - What's in this for - ME? Yep, the crook was openly soliciting a kickback from the CEO. Well you can well imagine how that went. The CEO got in his jet and left. I recall they picked a site in Mississippi for their auto assembly plant.
There are other equally disturbing stories of corruption even on the floor of the Louisiana Legislature.
I knew then Louisiana would never shake off it's reputation as a "democrat" s***hole of corruption. So, I left. I hope I was wrong. To which I say - hope springs eternal. God Bless Louisiana, Govenor Jeff Landry, and Elon Musk.

Homeowners insurance. Plus, it wasn’t home for me. So no family to leave. Lived there a decade +. Was fortunate in my career, but a better opportunity came up elsewhere.

Midlife crisis had me move to Napa, CA to be w GF who works in wine business. Two years of CA living and I came back home. Family is all here and I can deal with heat, just not desert.

Shreveport Regional Airport.
I missed tons of connecting flights in Dallas. It was costing me business, money, aggravation, time.
Now, I live 10 minutes from being inside the airport and now that I've retired, that no longer matters. Not moving back, though. Thus us my kid's home.

My mom decided to leave. I was stuck in the same entry level position i had since I moved back with no chance for advancement because the job market in Lafayette sucked. I was only there because my mother babysat my kid for free. Looking back I should of just stayed in Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta and I would probably be in upper management by now.
