What was the darkest period in human history?

Top three I'd say are the Crusades, Nazi Germany, and the rule of Genghis Khan. Out of those three the Nazis are definitely the most talked about, but were they the worst?

Probably when the volcano Toba erupted 70k years ago and caused a massive volcanic winter that lasted a decade and almost caused the extinction of man

Nazis. The factory-like system of killing "undesirables" for the purpose of creating a "superior race" is the sickest, most disturbing act of inhumanity ever.
