I am not sure you can name a certain period as the "darkest period". It's all relative.
With that said, I think we are living in probably the best time, in human history, despite the perception many people have.

I bet living anywhere in Europe, including eastern Russia, during the Black Plague probably was not fun.

So true. It's laughable how so many people whine about their 1st world problems.

Not sure if serious. Did it also wipe out all the evidence of said civilizations? Like pottery middens, any stone tablets or ruins? Evidence of crop production?

I don't get it either. People probably complain more now than ever and with the constant news coming through on social media, across our phones, etc.. It's easy to think that there is so much more going on in the world today.. But we just simply hear about things more..

Rome
I just got back from Italy. Rome was by far the worst city we visited. 1500 years later, the place is still a dump.
Pompei though, wow. Those poor people.

Off the top of my head, I would say the late ‘70s during the rule of communist dictators Pol Pot and chairman Mao. Both tried to force their countries to turn back to agrarian societies, which resulted in a good portion of their citizens starving to death. Had to be a brutal time to try to survive and affected many millions of people.

the Crusades
Nah, the number of people actually involved in the crusades was actually much much fewer than people realize. Also it wasnt strictly along religious lines either. At various points Muslims attacked Muslims and Muslims teamed up with Christians to kill off various competitors.

This. WWI was no joke, it literally changed the map of Europe forever and setup basically every problem you see in the middle east today because the Ottoman empire collapsed.

Communist purges in the Soviet Union

WW1 was the great tragedy that precipated so much awfulness. The 20th century was just one, unending, tragedy for Europe.
I don’t know how you avoid the war though. The French wouldn’t accept Germany’s position as the continental heavyweight.

The European tragedy is still ongoing.

The WWII Museum has a section on what the Japs did to the Koreans and Chinese. Germans didn't have anything, or much, on the Japs.
The Japanese did some sick things even before ww2.
Check out The Nanking Massacre
They did unspeakable things to the Chinese
I'm not saying this is the darkest period or anything, but just stating the Japanese military was insane.. and I'm not sure how we could ever trusted them during this period of time. It was literally right before WW2 I believe..
I am no history buff though..

The dark ages between 1973 until 1982, when St. Patrick cast out the serpent and the light of Heaven once again shined down on God's country.
