I honestly can't recall. My mom made my lunch all the way through high school.
I'm both embarrassed by this fact and impressed.

Our food in school was always good. Like others have said, with what they had to work with, the food was damn good.
Public school lunch ladies are horrendously underpaid, and do a really good job.
Now, they added free breakfast for all at some point, and that was the worst food I've ever tasted. Also for some reason the milk always tasted strange in the morning.

I was in school from mid 60's to 1978; lunch was really good back then. Older ladies cooking meals that were home style and none of this fat free, wheat only crap. Every Monday was Red Beans and smoked sausage, Friday was fish day. In high school we had a choice of hot meals or sandwich line and shake machines.

Graduated in 03 from Brother Martin in Nola.
High school:
Monday - Red Beans & rice $2.25 (I think)
Tuesday - Chicken fingers and waffle fries $2.75
Wednesday - Crispitos with chili/cheese. $1.50
Thursday and Friday ya never knew.
Daily we had a small salad bar, fresh cooked burgers, fries, icee's, desserts.
All in all it wasn't bad but I heard other schools had better.
ETA: They sold Hubig's pies for breakfast.

Grew up in NY. Freshman year you had to eat in the cafeteria but after that, if you had good grades you were allowed to leave campus to grab a bite at one of the local places in the neighborhood.
Leggios Deli was tucked inside a residential neighborhood and made the best sandwiches.
Cafeteria food was much like what it is now minus the bagged milk
I finished up HS in SC. Each day a different restaurant would come in and sell something. Taco Bell would come on tuesdays/thursdays with igloo coolers filled with Chillitos. Chik Fil A came in on Wednesdays which was my first introduction to their amazing sweet tea.

Today's lunches aren't as good. The new lunch restrictions, thanks Obama, has limited them. I'm not sure they fry anything any more.
I used to eat with my kids all the time. Thankfully, I still have some nieces and nephews in elementary school that think it's cool for their uncle to come eat with them. I don't tell them I'm just there for the $3.50 lunch.

It was great. We had a lot of whiners that always complained about the food and I told them to give it to me. I usually had 4 milks, 4 rolls, all the sticky rice and other goodies I wanted. Also never gained a pound. Young metabolism is a good thing

Time Period: 1996-2009
Milk in a bag
Capri Suns
Pizza squares were garbage.
Friday's were for Freshchetta.
Don't order the nachos - they look like barf (I have a feeling that this is universal if you went to public school
)
Chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes & brown or white gravy, a vegetable, roll, and milk: $2.00
For $0.50 more, you could get an extra roll and make not one, but two chicken fried steak sandwiches.
All in all - Grammar School and Junior High definitely outdid High School in terms of food quality (or we were just easier to impress, haha)

I went to school when the milk still came in stinky cartons, the lunch ladies could kickstart a D9 Caterpillar and all of the meals cooked with grind meat was the same color orange

Grad in 93.
Always served spinach or some type of greens right after they mowed the grass. lol
We had those hard plastic compartment trays, lunch ladies dishing out the classics - mashed potatos, corn, sloppy joes, sliced peaches.
Damn what I'd give to walk into that lunchroom at Broadmoor Elementary and have that food again.

Went to school in Mississippi and graduated in 99. Best thing I remember were those yeast rolls. No whole wheat shite like they serve today. You could even get two if you wanted. Guess we weren't too worried about carbs back then.

49 y/o and Class of 85 here. Went to public grade school. GREAT lunches every day (Harper Elementary in Minden - one of only a few "open classroom" schools left). The aforementioned yeast rolls were our favorite, but these ladies worked their rear ends off and made real food. Carton milk. They would always give "seconds" if we wanted it.
Private high school (Glenbrook - Minden.) We didn't have a cafeteria. Every morning in homeroom, we would fill out an order form from Neta's drive-in or Bar-B-Burger (both local only joints in Minden). Could order whatever you wanted if you could pay for it. That was great too.
No wonder I'm overweight...

Punahou in Hawaii - stellar Chinese food every day
El Paso - good Mexican food, best cheese enchiladas I've ever had
Everywhere else, not so good.

Mid-50s, lunch was about 20 cents a day so every month my mother would somehow scrape together $12 to send to school for my two siblings and me.
Food was good. Lots of rice and beans. Fish sticks (2) on Friday were a treat. Always had plenty to eat and honestly, some kids I went to school with, this was the only real good meal they got every day.
No air conditioning. Candy and drinks at recess were a nickel a piece if you had it.
Also, thanks to Earl Long, we got a slick tablet, a rough tablet, and 2 pencils every month.
Pledge and prayer every morning. Line up, wash hands before lunch.
Times have changed.

Graduated in 2012, beans every Monday, and nacho day was worth getting in a fight over a quicker spot in line. We had shitty Sysco food also most of the time besides when they made gumbo every few weeks. Other daily options were cookies which were amazing, pizza, chicken patty or spicy chicken patty or hamburgers. Ascension public school fwiw.
Edit: truthfully can't remember what type of trays we had. I feel like freshmen year we had to turn in hard plastic trays and after that it was Styrofoam but I truthfully can't remember

Holy frick! Crispitos were the BEST. I didn't know it was something other schools had. They slathered ours in chili sauce. The line for lunch that day was insane and you could lose your life if you tried to cut.
My high school had a separate burger line that had hamburgers and grilled chicken, we also had a salad line. Then we had a snack bar with all sorts of crap you could buy and they made cheese fries there, as well.
I saw someone else mention they ordered a case of crispitos. Where from? I doubt I will like them now but sure would love to find out. The Tyson frozen ones are way too thin and not at all like we had in HS.

Haven't seen Tater Tots mentioned. I think they counted them as an entire food group at my school. They always were good and crispy, though.
