I fricking loved school lunches. Graduated in 2010. We had a few different lines. Main line (different menu every day), sub and soup line, pizza line, chicken fingers/sandwich line, and Mexican line.
It was pretty typical school lunch food but just fricking amazing to me. We had chicken parm every other Wednesday and people would freak out and make a big deal about it cause it was fire.

Awhile I was eating lunch with a friend and he said "you remember in high school when we paid $0.75 for lunch?". When you think about it, that's a deal. There were certain things that were served that wasn't the greatest, but I would pay $0.75 just for the bread... But that also included a drink..

Graduated a few years back so here's an idea of what lunches are like today. We had main items ranging from pizza, cheeseburgers, baked potatoes, nuggets, wings, crispadoras, burritos or ravioli (4 of those were available in 1 day. Side items were typically sliced pineapples, apples, broccoli, mustard greens, mashed potatoes and fries. We had milk and tea to drink and the lunches ranged from 2.50 to 3 dollars.

60's and 70's.
Catholic school.
Heavyset white women cooked almost everything from scratch.
Chicken fried steak
Cinnamon rolls (big hit)
Sheet cake
Shrimp gumbo (Fridays)
Fish sticks (Fridays)
Pizza (one square as a part of the meal)
Stuff like that.
One carton of milk.
In the mid-70's they let us buy an extra carton of chocolate milk.
Kids on strict diets could get a lettuce leaf and cottage cheese.
In the 70's they began to offer breakfast for the kids who hung out at school early. Milk and a Pop Tart for .15, stuff like that.
We never had fast food or any type of buffet. You got what they were serving and you usually had to eat it. I'd check out the menu and pass on lunch if it wasn't what I liked. We had a dick football coach who'd make people clean their plates like they were in boot camp.

School lunch in the 70's and 80's was about as generic, mass produced, and as fake as it comes. Mystery meat was always the protein of the day along with a side of government cheese that tasted like flavored rubber. The rolls were about the only thing I could ever stomach. Ate a lot of McDonald's back then.

couldn't eat there, we would usually skip and go to WhataBurger, McDonald's, or my house and make a sammich

Fresh baked bread was nice
Salad bar for the high schoolers
Condiments came from these upside down , cow teet , looking things that you squeezed onto your food
Elementary = only milk or water
High school = got a soft drink option
Other than that, not much stands out

Does anybody remember "milk break"? Sometime mid morning 2 students from each class got to go to the cafeteria - inside the actual walk-in fridge with that big, round handle; load up a carton of milk for each kid in cubed plastic crates and bring back to the class. Getting picked to get the milk was the most exciting part of school. I loved that cafeteria. like a previous poster mentioned; it just smelled good.
The arse-hole kids that always got in trouble never, ever, got to go get the milk I felt sorry for them.
BTW this was mid to late 70s.

Trays with the little compartments
Metal utensils
Food was good
Yeast rolls were great
5 different grade schools in late 50's and early 60's and they were all pretty good if I remember correctly

Graduated in 96 in Nashville and everything about the same as what's been said except 2 things: no bagged milk (we had small cartons) , and everybody passed on the milk for Jungle Juice. And the pizza was awesome in high school. Eveybody trying to trade something for your pizza. A lot of people loves pizza covered in ranch. Gross
My son just graduated this pay May and his school had make brand fast food and Starbucks in his school cafeteria. Crazy.

Grade school in New Orleans, St Anthony on Canal st. Was there in the 70's.
I always recall having spinach after the grass was cut.
Standard lunches were a meat and sides with a carton of milk.
I remember one of the desserts was a small peanut butter square and recall contests as to who could eat the most of them
I recall after a while toward the end of my run I brought my lunch, and they made the kids who brought their lunch sit together away from the kids who at the school lunch.
High school was a plate lunch option or hamburger and fries and maybe a pizza option as well

I did, class of 83
Posted on 10/18/16 at 12:18 pm to hobotiger
I was class of 13.
Always a hot lunch line and a sandwich line.
Mondays were always red beans and rice
Tuesdays were taco Tuesdays
Wednesday was always Italian
Thursday was a toss up
Fridays were a mashup of everything left over from the week
Food was shite but the donuts they made for breakfast were always great.
Senior year once a month the senior pres would pick a place and everyone would place an order and get the food delivered to Jesuit. Five Happiness was a favorite and the best gig was probably when they brought a taco truck into the courtyard.
