Elementary school in the mid 50's and we had mac and cheese, green beans, some sort of meat and then either beets (which I never ate after that first bite), carrots or Brussel sprouts; some green vegetable. And rolls. Usually tolerable, but not great. But it was always normal fresh cooked meals. Used to have to try some of everything on your plate. Always hid the beets in my milk carton.. could not eat those things

This was in Bogalusa, LA by the way. Pleasant Hill elementary school.

at my high school we had
regular line (home cooked type meals)
burger line
pizza line
salad/potatoe bar

if you had 2nd lunch (some people had lunch earlier than others depended on your schedule) and cleaned your plate you could go back to the regular line multiple times. this was only worth it on roasted chicken or lasagna days

Was that a LA thing? We didn't have those

Must be. I've been laughing my arse off for 15 minutes after seeing it on page 1 of this thread. Then even harder when I google image searched it. That sounds like the most poor folk thing I've ever heard.

it sucked...damned near every day. suspicious meat like substance over rice a mash. or some lame arse frozen chicken thing. sometimes burger day was tolerable.

when they decided to have a sandwich line it got better. junior ear and beyond i left school for lunch.

Fresh baked bread was nice

Yeah, my parents couldn't get over them making fresh rolls for us like that.

We took it for granted.
