No disagreement there as an American, but that doens't really carry any weight to foreginers around the world which is the overall topic at hand here. Pre-9/11 days, I would bet you anything that the statue of liberty was more recognized and known than the twin towers were around the globe.

Independence Hall is the closest comparison

The OP was about America, not the world.
The twin towers were an iconic national image deeply tied to our spirit as a nation.

what would an equivalent loss to the US be? One that is an iconic national image and deeply tied to our spirit as a nation?

Our National Cathedral is amazing. It's my favorite place to visit in DC. Last time, I took the behind the scenes tour and we were shown the attic, some crypts and other limited access places. I've never been to Notre Dame in Paris, but seeing our cathedral, one can see how a fire might rip through the attic area.

Ummmm, bullshite. Everyone knew about New York. They were seen in many establishing shots in film. There’s a reason Osama Bin Laden went after it rather than the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building.

I’m willing to bet it still is. The Statue of Liberty is synoptic with the United States. I’ve seen videos of people in Afghanistan being given pictures of the towers being blown up and having not idea what it was. They knew the Statue of Liberty though.

There’s nothing in the U.S. that compares. First off, Notre Dame was constructed during the era of the Crusades. We don’t have anything close to that old.
I think there are regional landmarks that might be an equivalent loss for the surrounding areas.
For instance, the Alamo burning to the ground would be a devastating loss to San Antonio residents, and Texas as a whole.
The entire French Quarter, including St. Louis Cathedral would be a similar, maybe even a greater loss to NOLA.
The Capitol or White House would be the only thing that would compare from a national standpoint.

Well we don’t have a built structure that’s been standing for 800+ years so nothing really. Something natural would be a better comparison

Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty would be the closest things with any history to them.
Hell most Americans wouldn't even recognize indepence hall.
There would be too much schadenfreude if the white house or Capitol Hill went up.
Most of the surviving colonial buildings would really only be a regional tragedy. Like if The Cabildo, St Louis, and Presbytere all went up.

We don’t have anything that is as significant on cultural/religious grounds as Notre Dame.
Statue of Liberty would be the closest.
Something that significantly damaged Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Grand Canyon would generate similar outcry but as natural wonders it’s hard to compare
