I'd say the Twin Towers even if noone were in them, would still have been a huge loss as far as Iconic American symbols

There aren't any buildings with the historical importance of Notre Dame in the country, simply because the cathedral was around 600 years prior to the founding of our nation. The only comparable iconic structures tied to the national image would be the Statue of Liberty, Capitol, or White House.
The list of comparable structures in the world is also pretty small, some of the examples I can think of includes:
England-Westminster Abbey
Russia-St. Basils Cathedral
China-Forbidden City
India-Taj Mahal
Turkey-Hagia Sophia
Italy-Coliseum
Most of them are churches just because the church had the money to build these grand structures that have stood the test of time.

Three in particular come to mind: Statue of Liberty, White House, Capitol. IMO, the SoL is our most sentimental structure because it’s unique and purely represents the American spirit without any politics involved.
ND might be a lot older than the SoL, but I bet the SoL is a more recognizable structure around the world and because the USA is a more visible and influential country than France I think its destruction would create a bigger impact.

From the outside looking in, i'd say the twin towers because, first of all it is in NYC, which is the place people from other countries think about when they they of the US. It was a symbol of capitalism and the only way to destroy the US is to hurt it's economy..
But I would say equivalent to ND.. Maybe the white house?
But the beauty of the US is that we are a relatively big nation so we have US symbols across the whole country.
