I have been informed that I can expect a new role in the company that is considered a promotion. My manager has told me that the company wants this to be seen as a lateral move because they don't want my current position to be a stepping stone for other employees into my upcoming role.

I will continue to handle the responsibilities of my current role along with the responsibilities that come with that of the new role. With that being said, I am not expecting a raise when this is formally announced in my office.

Do I have a legit gripe in this instance? I have been praised for my performance, initiative, and work ethic and that is why I am being given this opportunity. It is 100% merit based promotion but the company is going to market it to myself others as a lateral move in my career.

Banks are notorious for this. They have vice presidents out the yin-yang.

Considered by whom? Not by who it matters apparently.

More work for the same money? You didn’t get promoted, your company is just saving money by not hiring someone else.

Bitch about it if you believe you're too valuable for them to tell you to frick off...don't bitch about if you think they'll tell you to frick off

Pretty easy

More responsibilities without being compensated for said additional responsibilities is a no bueno, friend. Tell them to pay up or walk

It can’t be a lateral move AND a promotion. That’s a huge contradiction that makes it sound like they are taking advantage of you.

thats a demotion if more work and responsibility is added without more pay and benefits

go tell them just that right now before anything is announced and tell them in no uncertain terms you arent accepting a demotion, lateral or otherwise, unless they increase your pay and benefits.

tell them if thats all they are offering is more work then you rather not get such a "reward/gift"

Are there any perks involved in lieu of money? Will you now get a secretary that you can plow on your lunch hour?

The role I currently sit in was created in 2017 to blend administration and inside sales positions. There has been one individual that has moved from this new support role to an inside sales role. I would be the second. Though this is definitely a promotion my manager is marketing it to the rest of the company that this is nothing more than a lateral move. They still want me to handle jobs in my current role and the new role which brings many new responsibilities.

I expect to walk out of the meeting without a raise. At this point I will take my time to gather myself and ask for a second meeting. I have everything I need on pen and paper that proves I deserve the raise.

Sounds to me that this is their initial offer to which they expect a counter by you.

I'd counter for a 10% raise but settle for 7%

You have a legitimate gripe. I would come to them with a well thought out request for a raise to go along with your promotion. Lay out the reasons why, including your performance, responsibilities, etc.

I would also have an amount in mind because they will likely ask - although I wouldn't lead in with the amount, just be prepared for the question.

I think that it's unlikely they will flatly say no to that request, and if they do you will at least get some clarity and put a nugget in their mind that you expected a raise to come with the extra responsibility. If you decide to stick it out, approach them again in 3-6 months with the same request, and you will (hopefully) have some results driven examples to back you up. Good luck.

New hires with zero experience in this role are currently making 11.5% more than I do.

I think you answered your own question here. If you get turned down, you need to be looking. I would love to know what their rationale would be for paying you less than people with no experience who do less work.
