Both of my jobs after leaving the Army I got because of contacts. Networking is the number one way to snag a job these days.
To OP:
As others have suggested, start working towards a cert. In your case I'd suggest a CCENT considering your Associate's degree. That will get you half way to a CCNA.
At my previous job I was the IT Infrastructure Manager so hired all the system and network admins. For me, I didn't really care about the degree. What I cared about was experience, or if a junior position, entry level certs. That showed me that the applicant was willing to go above and beyond and continue his education on his own.
I've transitioned over to Cybersecurity, but I grew up in networking so if you have any questions, feel free to ask away.

I could probably pass the A+ test and maybe Net+ and Sec+. I took those classes last spring and need a refresher though. I took C++ classes in the summer and fall.

A+ is stupid easy. N+ was pretty easy as well. CCNA and CCDP were tough, but a little bit of studying will make it a breeze

If you can pass the Net+, you can pass the CCENT.
An A+ would help with the HelpDesk gig, but I'd put it on a lower priority.
You also need to decide what direction you want to go: Systems (servers) or Networks. Two different cert paths there.
I'd backburner the Sec+ too. If you want to go the cybersecurity route, you're going to need several years of both network and system admin under your belt first.

I feel you on this one. I've been stuck at this job that I do not enjoy at all. Have been searching for other work for over a year now. I don't get many calls back. My resume is all over the place and I don't have experience in most of the fields I want to work in. Got word yesterday that my resume is even worse than what I thought, but I have no idea how to improve it.
I'm almost to the point that I feel like I need to start begging. Unfortunately not making enough to afford to go back to school either.

I probably should have taken those tests after I finished the classes. They are temporary now and I didn't want to waste a year or more having a cert I couldn't use while still in school.

Same here. Got laid off in August as well. Between Linkedin and Indeed it says i have applied to 250 jobs. That does not count jobs from company websites.
I have had more interviews in the last month that I have in the last 7 months.

Try updating or rewording your resume and cover letter. Look up buzz words for your field and make sure you work them in somewhere. Good luck.

Use temp agencies. A lot of companies use temp agencies to evaluate a person then offer direct employment if it's a good fit
