re: what point do you give up on the job search?

You need to format your resume in a way that makes it obvious that you've been a full time student most recently. Your resume is only going to get about 10 seconds of attention so everything needs to be extremely obvious, easy to find, and easy to comprehend.

I would also suggest starting in a temp/contract role to gain some experience. The hiring is less stringent and it gives you an opportunity to prove yourself. If you're good and you're adding value they'll keep you or recommend you to others in their network that can use your skills.

Man, your situation is what scares the crap out of me. Never give up, I know it's hard nut keep your head up. U might want to consider moving as well.

I’m in the same boat, brother. Been at it for 18 months. Only real opportunity I got was a $75k/year gig in Los Angeles or Manhattan.

Sucks but keep at it. People tell me it’ll work out one day.

Edit - just saw that you have a computer degree. That’s a lot better than my English MA.

When I left my last job I had enough money saved up to last 4 years or so. I'm not exactly destitute now but I don't want to get that point either. The reality is you need to make money. I'd rather not have to go cut grass or do construction to keep from being homeless.

My long term plan was to work in Baton Rouge for about 5 years and see how things are going, both with the city and the job. If things are going ok I would stay, if not I would look to Houston, Dallas, or Austin. Don't really want to move right now. Maybe later though.

Late to the thread so this has probably been mentioned, but if you can don’t limit yourself geographically. Apply anywhere and everywhere in the US.

I was unhappy where I was and looked to get out of BR. After a year of applying to companies all over the place, I finally got a company to bite and start there in a few weeks.

It was discouraging at times and sometimes I thought it would never happen. But it did and it will for you too.

You could look into the building controls / automation with a computer networking degree. If that is up your alley I would look at the commercial HVAC companies around town to see if they have any entry level openings.

What was your dead end job? It seems a job where you can cover all living expenses, tuition and books and save enough to cover all living expenses for 4 years can't be that bad of a gig.
