I hope this is a joke. If you're too inexperienced to identify one of the most easily identifiable venomous snakes in North America, you're too inexperienced to handle one. I've caught them before - you wouldn't believe how much they can contort their mouth to try to get a bite on you.
ETA: That's a damn fine looking specimen too. Its pattern looks a bit atypical. Definitely a keeper there.

I have a dog if you live in NW La. - she hates copperheads and has decimated quite a few of them.

The area in the photo around the snakes head has odd edges - maybe this is a reptilus photoshoppus.

You mean on the top where it's white-ish near its left eye? My phone is just potato quality
ETA: and I wish I could photoshop that well

Pretty rare to come across a venomous snake in LA.
There are cottonmouths and copperheads galore in the woods/lake behind my house.

Just get a stick with a fork in it, and push it on it's body and slide it up to it's head. Once you have the stick where the body and head meet hold it there and grab the snake at that point. You've made it to where it can't bite you.
Another way, is the old croc hunter way, but it's dangerous as hell. Pick it up by it's tail and hold it at arm's length and flick it's body every time it moves towards you.
My grandparent's farm was overrun with rattlers back in the day. After gramps got bit, we all had to carry snake sticks when walking around.
Used to catch them and throw them in the freezer, they die curled up. Then feed them to the dogs as treats with the head chopped off.

I don't know snakes
I knew it was a viper if that gives you some solace.

I incidentally lifted my feet off the ground in my own living room when I saw your pic

Yes, it's a Copperhead. Do not try to pick it up with a stick.
Get a large empty trash can. Sweep it into that with the stick or a broom. Put the lid on, take it to Mitch Landrieu's girlfriend's house (that's where he's shacking up) and let it go.
FIFY!

My advice is a shovel to the neck for copperheads, rattlesnakes, and water moccasins.
