Bring it to Lee Circle and tell the Tulane anarchists it's a friendly endangered snake that likes to be petted.

That's crazy to me. Growing up on the water, 1 out of 10 or 15 was a cotton. And the banded water snake is very similar, causing confusion for most people.

But the cottonmouth is a beast. They don't back from anything.

What part of LA you live in?

Dude, you aren't going to convince people there aren't cotton mouths in LA. Yes not all snakes by the water are venemous, but they are here and I'd be surprised if you hadn't encountered one.

Pic isn't clear and it's hard to see the pattern, but that's not a Cottonmouth. I'm going Diamondback water snake on that one.

I've encountered a ton. But it's a fraction compared to the amount of total non venomous snakes I've come across.

Most people don't know anything about snakes and every snake they see is a venomous moccasin. Which is mis identified more than likely.

"The dudes ring" sounds like he knows his snakes so I'll take his word, but most likely it's not venomous.

In southern LA the only ones you'll find are the cottonmouth and copperhead. So my point is that it's probably just a water snake.

He's not trolling you. My first thought is water snake. But like I said, If you think it is a cotton I'll take your word for it.

Thanks. Should I try to relocate it? I've handled a few snakes in my day (no homo) but never a copperhead.

Only grab it if you are the ghost of Steve Irwin

Yes. They are very dark.

The main thing to look for is a vicious V head, and the raccoon bands across the eyes.

That's a copperhead. Don't see a lot of those usually damn water moccasins. We also have diamondback rattler and timber rattler.

I have actually stepped on all freaking four at one time or another, and water moccasins a few times.

Simple test angular head cat eyes leave it alone. You will exclude a few good snakes but knock out all the bad ones except coral snake. ( have not stepped on that one yet) lol
